PREP UPDATE: Prattville girls fall in 7A semis; LAMP tennis sweeps Charles Henderson

BIRMINGHAM – Jordan Hunter scored 22 points, to lead Hewitt-Trussville to a 50-41 victory over Prattville in the 2024 AHSAA Class 7A girls’ state basketball semifinals at the BJCC Legacy Arena on Thursday.
Prattville (23-6) was making its second-consecutive trip to the state tournament but struggled with its shooting, making only 12-of-45 shot attempts and missed all nine of its 3-point attempts.
U’llyriah Lewis led Prattville with 21 points, and Jayla West-Young added nine points and five rebounds.
Hewitt will face Hoover in the title game on Saturday at 4 p.m.

BASEBALL

Montgomery Academy 9, JAG 1

John Allen Jones went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Parker Cook had a hit and drove in three runs as the Eagles defeated the Jaguars 9-1 at Bowman Field on Thursday.

Rick McBride and Luke Jones each had a pair of hits, while Camp Shanahan had an RBI single and Reid McBride added an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

Reid McBride picked up the win with four innings of two-hit ball, striking out eight JAG batters in the process. Cook pitched two innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit with five strikeouts. Andrew Hosein finished the game with a pair of strikeouts in a no-hit seventh.

Montgomery Academy (3-2) remains home to play Catholic on Friday at 4 p.m.

Trinity 7, Montgomery Academy 2

Walker McClinton surrendered just two runs on three hits while striking out two in a complete-game performance as the Wildcats defeated the Eagles 7-2 at Whittle-Armstrong Field on Wednesday.

At the plate, Trinity Presbyterian had 10 hits led by Brady Rascoll, who was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Ross Sanders went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a double and Cooper Bernier went 2 for 2 with two runs scored and a walk.

Trinity (6-2) remains home to play Stanhope Elmore on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., while Montgomery Academy (2-2) will play host to JAG on Thursday at 5 p.m. and Catholic on Friday at 4 p.m.

Trinity 8, Alabama Christian 3

Patton Mitchell held the ACA bats in check while going 2 for 4 at the plate, including a two-run double, as the Wildcats defeated the Eagles 8-3 at Whittle-Armstrong Field on Tuesday.

Mitchell surrendered just two hits and one run over 4.1 innings while striking out three and walking two.

The Wildcats had nine hits, led by Brady Rascoll, who went 2 for 3 with a run scored, a pair of RBIs, a double, a walk and a stolen base. Fleming Hall went 1 for 3 with a walk and a two-run home run.

Lowndes Academy 13, Sparta Academy 1

The Rebels scored nine runs in the first inning to earn an easy victory on Thursday.

Clayton Hussey led the way with three hits including a triple and a double and three runs driven in. Ashton Yelder homered and had four RBIs. Pierson Hill drove in three runs.

Hill was the winning pitcher allowing three hits.

Macon East 14, Lowndes Academy 1

CECIL - The Knights scored nine runs in the fifth inning to pull away from Lowndes Academy.

Barrett Spaeth drove in four runs with a home run and a double while Bryant Morrison added three RBIs for the Knights.

Braydn Stokes had the lone run driven in for the Rebels.

SOFTBALL

Pike Road 7, Smiths Station 5

SMITHS STATION -- Anna Williams pitched a complete game and got some offensive help from Kennedy Thompson, who went 3 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs, as the Patriots defeated Smiths Station 7-5 on Thursday.  

Williams picked up her third win of the year, throwing seven innings while surrendering eight hits and five earned runs. She struck out three and walked five.

Ameria Anderson and Kelsey Williams each had a single and a pair of stolen bases, Addison Belyeu tripled in a run, Ava Milton singled in a run and Kennedy Cuthbert added a single for the Patriots.

Jenni Goins and Summer Crunk each homered for Smiths Station and Libby Parkman had three hits.

Pike Road (7-2) will travel to Troy to play in a tournament hosted by Charles Henderson that starts on Friday.

Pike Road 6, Prattville Christian 5

PIKE ROAD -- Kennedy Thompson singled in Ameria Anderson in the botttom of the seventh to cap a four-run inning and lift the Patriots to a 6-5 win over Prattville Christian on Tuesday night.

Pike Road took an early lead in the first inning when Anderson bunted for a single, stole second and scored on an Addison Belyeu single, but the Panthers grabbed the lead with two runs in the fourth. Pike Road center fielder Kelsey Williams kept the Panthers from adding to the scoreboard in the fifth with a throw home to nail a runner at the plate.

In the bottom half of the inning, Kennedy Cuthbert homered to tie the game at 2-2, but the Panthers answered with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh for a 5-2 lead. 

Pike Road pinch hitter Kasyn Wilson opened the bottom of the seventh by advancing to first after she was hit by a pitch. Slapper Paisley Forshey then reached base on an error before Cuthbert singled in Wilson and took second on the throw home. Anderson followed with a bunt single and stole second on the next pitch. Belyeu was intentionally walked to load the bases but Kelsey Williams was hit by a pitch to score Cuthbert with the game-tying run, setting up Thompson’s game winner.

Haley Melton pitched 5.1 innings to pick up the win, allowing nine hits, three walks and four earned runs. Anna Williams got the win by pitching the final 1.2 innings, giving up two hits and an earned run while walking one and striking out one.

Cuthbert was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Thompson was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Anderson was 2 for 3, Belyeu was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Ava Milton was 1 for 3.

Catholic 17, Greenville 2

GREENVILLE -- Catholic scored five runs in the second inning to cruise to a 17-2 win over the Tigers on Thursday.

Hayden Fitts and Riley Wilcoxson each had five hits in the game for the Knights and Haley Ishman went 2 for 5 with a two-run double in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie. Ishman finished with four RBIs.

Jennifer Looney picked up the win in the circle, allowing just three hits and two runs in five innings while walking one and striking out six. Gabby Eady pitched a scoreless sixth inning, allowing no hits while walking one.

Sy’Nya Edwards and Jaliah McMeans each had an RBI for the Tigers.

BOYS SOCCER

Catholic 9, Andalusia 0

Stott Blancas and Ariyn Gilbert each scored a pair of goals to lead the Knights to a 9-0 win over Andalusia at Catholic on Thursday night.

Ben Chitlik, Joe Reeves, JP Costa, Tony Lemuz and Todd Bonnell each added a goal for Catholic, which improved to 3-0 in Class 4A Area 2 play with the win.

Reeves had a pair of assists as well, with Juan Escalante, Bonnell, Costa and Max Freeman also contributing assists.

Catholic (5-0) remains home to play St. James on Tuesday, then will resume area play with a game against Booker T. Washington at home on Thursday.

Catholic 5, Prattville Christian 2

Stott Blancas and Joe Reeves each scored a pair of goals and Tymari Isner added another as the Knights defeated Prattville Christian 5-2 on Tuesday night at Catholic.

Ben Chitlik had a pair of assists for the Knights. Blancas, Todd Bonell and JP Costa also had assists for Catholic.

Chilton County 4, Prattville Christian 3

CLANTON -- Cade Segars scored all three goals for the Panthers in a 4-3 loss to Chilton County on Thursday. Brady Roberson and Wade Pratt each had one assist.

PCA (0-3) will play host to Brew Tech on Tuesday.

The Tigers also won the junior varsity game, 4-1. For PCA, Lex White scored the team’s only goal with an assist from his younger brother Nik. PCA (0-3) will host Catholic on Monday.

 Montgomery Academy 4, Enterprise 2

Win Berry scored Montgomery Academy’s first goal and Brewer Welch had a hat trick to help the Eagles defeat the Wildcats 4-2 at McLemore Field on Tuesday night for their third consecutive win.

Welch was assisted on a pair of his goals by Berry and Reeves Hall.

Montgomery Academy (3-3) will host Pike Road on Saturday in a 6A Area 4 match.

GIRLS SOCCER

Prattville Christian 3, Chilton County 0

CLANTON -- Avery Rogers scored a pair of goals and Bella Carothers added another as PCA defeated Chilton County 3-0 on Thursday.

Kendall Jordan recorded the shutout in goal.

PCA (1-2) returns home to play host to Brew Tech on Tuesday.

St. James 7, Tallassee 0

The Trojans opened the 2024 soccer season at Carlisle Field with a 7-0 win on Tuesday afternoon.

Katie Brightwell scored five goals, fellow senior Mary Grace Hixon added a goal and seventh grader Elsa Seeman added another goal in her first varsity game.

Hope McCain recorded two assists coming from the backline as well as assists by Hailey Vance, Hixon, Elliette Barton and Molly Phillips, with Barton and Phillips assisting in their first-ever varsity game.

St. James (1-0) travels to Catholic on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

BOYS TENNIS

LAMP 9, Charles Henderson 0

The Golden Tigers swept singles and doubles matches from the Trojans on Thursday, winning the first of four consecutive 4A-5A Section 3 matches.

In singles, LAMP’s Ian Shin defeated Caleb Richardson at No. 1, Ian Kim beat Xavien Tice at No. 2, Sun Ho Kim shut out Tre Williams at Mo. 3, Minsoo Park defeated Benjamin Chen at No. 4, Richard Chen defeated Jaden Cowart at No. 5 and Wonjun Lee beat Paul Tipp at No. 6.

In doubles, Shin and Sun Ho Kim shut out Richardson-Tice at No. 1, Ian Kim and Lee defeated Williams-Chen at No. 2 and Park-Chen beat Cowart and Seth Hitchcock at No. 3.

LAMP (12-2) improved to 5-0 in section play and will face Catholic on Monday in a section match.

GIRLS TENNIS

LAMP 9, Charles Henderson 0

The Golden Tigers swept singles and doubles matches from Charles Henderson on Thursday, improving to 5-0 in 4A-5A Section 3 play.

In singles, LAMP’s Reena Chen defeated Mary Samson Dunn at No. 1, Hannah Lee defeated Ansley Holbert at No. 2, Grace Liu beat Kayla Pearson at No. 3, Dabeen Choi shut out Penny Earnest at No. 4, McKenzie Kim defeated Jennalee Lunsford at No. 5 and Jamie Lo beat Xuan-Nga Dinh at No. 6.

In doubles, Lee-Liu defeated Dunn-Holbert at No. 1, Chen-Kim beat Pearson-Earnest at No. 2 and Choi and Hannah Baik beat Lunsford-Dinh at No. 3.

LAMP (9-4) will face Catholic on Monday at 2:30 p.m. in a section match.
