PRESS PICKS (WEEK 1): College and prep football meet for the first time

For the first time, high school and college games mix on the docket.
Yes, the list is small and rather insignificant but a few college games “officially” open the season.
The key word is “insignificant.”
Not too many will be scurrying to watch Vanderbilt or Nebraska, but it’s still college football.
Be aware, in the future, of the possibility of the college season permanently moving up a weekend due to a “need” for another bye week. It’s not too hot to play football in August, is it?
A few FBS teams have taken advantage of the extra week. As mentioned, Vanderbilt is one, although a trip to Hawaii can take the steam out of any team.
Nebraska and Northwestern are in Ireland to spread the good cheer of college football and hoping to create new fans. (Good luck on that.)
Montgomery is home to the annual FCS Classic with Jacksonville State facing Stephen F. Austin. That might be the best matchup of the weekend. Rich Rodriguez apparently is fired up after accusing his opponent of spying. Like we needed a reason to watch this one…
Even Alabama State is getting into the early act, participating in this year’s MEAC-SWAC Challenge in Atlanta. The Hornets and Bison get “big” ESPN on Saturday.
A few high school teams actually open region play this week (Robert E. Lee) while others are playing for the first time (Park Crossing).
