SATURDAY PREPS: MA tennis splits with Huntsville

BOYS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 7, Huntsville 2

HUNTSVILLE -- John Alford and Jackson Brown got the win at No. 1 doubles to set the tone as Montgomery Academy defeated Huntsville High 7-2 on Saturday.

Ron Sharma and Ford Morano followed with a win at No. 2 doubles and Anton Yang and Bo Johnston completed the sweep of doubles with a win at No. 3.

Brown, Morano, Yang and Duncan McInnes won singles matches.

Montgomery Academy (9-3) will face section opponent Enterprise High at O’Connor Tennis Center on Monday.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Huntsville 5, Montgomery Academy 4

HUNTSVILLE -- Gabby Barrera, Mae Mae Voltz and Lola Campbell won singles matches and Barrera and Voltz teamed up at No. 1 doubles for the win, but Huntsville High won the other three singles matches and a pair of doubles matches to edge the Eagles 5-4 on Saturday.

Barrera’s win at No. 1 singles left her undefeated at 16-0 this season.

Montgomery Academy will return home to play section opponent Enterprise on Monday.

 

Montgomery Academy 9, Randolph School 0

HUNTSVILLE -- The Eagles swept Randolph in singles and doubles to complete a 9-0 victory on Friday at Athletic Center Alabama.

Winning singles for the Eagles were Gabby Barrera at No. 1, Mae Mae Voltz at No. 2, Lola Campbell at No. 3, Marianna Lassner at No. 4, Mary Surhea White at No. 5 and Alyssa Kaplan at No. 6.

The doubles teams of Barrera-Voltz, Campbell-White and Lassner-Kaplan also won matches for Montgomery Academy.

 

SOFTBALL

Pike Road 5, Catholic 1

PIKE ROAD -- Pike Road won its first bracket game in the Patriot Classic on Saturday as Anna Williams posted her second win over the Knights in as many days.

The freshman righty pitched five innings, surrendering four hits while striking out three to earn her seventh win of the season.

Ameria Anderson and Haley Melton were both 2 for 2 and each had a double. Addison Belyeu had an RBI double. Ava Milton and Mary Hayden Hargrove each had a hit as well.

 

Oak Mountain 10, Pike Road 2

PIKE ROAD -- The Patriots managed just four hits against Oak Mountain, falling 10-2 on Saturday in the Patriot Classic.

Haley Melton suffered the loss in the circle. Kennedy Cuthbert had two of the Patriots’ hits, with Paisley Forshey and Ameria Anderson each getting a hit.

Carolyn Graham hit a three-run home run to lead Oak Mountain. The Eagles went on to beat Brew Tech in the championship game.
