TROY - The Troy University rodeo team recently concluded the 2008-2009 season with a trip to the College National Finals Rodeo. Both the men’s and women’s teams finished third in the Ozark Region this year, and the men’s team finished 22nd in the nation.

Andy Seiler spent the better part of the previous week calling the Southeastern Livestock Rodeo at Garrett Coliseum with a few other things on his mind.
One was the fact that he was not too far away from his current home of Troy where he is a senior at the university. Second, he was thinking about being another step closer to calling the big show or Las Vegas one day.

The Southeastern Livestock Exposition Rodeo will open on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Garrett Coliseum with some of the top names in the business. Many of the nation’s top money winners will be here on Thursday for what should be an interesting night.

Stace Smith has been in the business of rodeos for three decades. He has seen cowboys come and go. Lately, he is seeing a different entry in the field of bull and bronc riding.
“Yeah, it has changed,” Smith said. “I don’t mean this to be ugly but this new crop of riders is a different breed. They are great athletes but they are also skateboarders and snowboarders. They come from another world than the guys who have won in the past.”
Such is the life of the new cowboy. Instead of growing up on the prairie, the latest group of riders are learning balance on ice and wheels.

The term evokes several images.
A post route worked to perfection between quarterback and receiver comes to mind. So does a long screaming homer off the bat of Manny, Chipper or A-Rod. Even the thought of finding a trophy large-mouth bass in cavernous waters covers the slogan.
