Mallett returns as top SEC quarterback

HOOVER – Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett was asked the typical question that a quintessential All-American might be asked, since he wasn’t expected to return to Fayetteville this year.

NFL scouts say he could have been a Top 10 draft pick back in April. The Razorbacks, although improving, don’t look as though they will challenge for a national title or SEC title and are getting very little support to win the Western Division.

So, Ryan, why come back?

If there is any question what time of year it is, follow the college football rumors.

June has traditionally become the month in which media must fill the same amount of space in newspapers or on the evening sports reports but without concrete stories. Websites must be updated to keep up with the Jones. The cycle runs faster these days.

Since few matter-of-fact stories are available (no college or high school games are being played save the College World Series), the rumor mill cranks up. This year, it hasn’t been too difficult with the Big 12 in flux and USC finally getting the hammer from the NCAA.

Morris named All-American; Tide goes to Atlanta

AUBURN  - Hunter Morris was named a Collegiate Baseball Second Team All-American on Thursday, the publication announced. The Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy, Morris has helped lead Auburn to a No. 1 seed in this weekend's NCAA Auburn Regional... Alabama will be making its 21st NCAA Regional appearance when the Crimson Tide travels to the 2010 Atlanta (Ga.) Regional at Russ Chandler Stadium this week.

AUM's Stacin Halverson, Anaheim, Calif., has been named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Softball Scholar-Athlete team.... For the second consecutive season, Huntingdon outfielder Kyle Eller was selected to the All-South Region Team, while pitcher Alex Sanford was chosen for the first time...Sprinters Dawn Hermanes and Tokeyah Jones capped off Alabama State University’s women’s track & field season recently at the NCAA East Regional held at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track.

SEC sends four to Super Regional softball

The Southeastern Conference placed seven in the NCAA Softball Tournament and has now advanced four teams to the NCAA Super Regional Rounds.  This marks the most for the league since five, the record, were sent in 2007.  No. 1 Alabama, No. 4 Florida, No. 6 Georgia and No. 15 Tennessee will all compete in the best two out of three series, May 27-30.

Bryant, Rutledge among top shortstops

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Sam Judah was 4-for-5 to lead No. 5-seed Auburn-Montgomery to a 9-2 victory over Eighth-seeded Emmanuel in the first elimination game of the Southern States Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Golden Park on Friday... Faulkner committed three errors that resulted in seven unearned runs in the fifth inning of a 13-3 loss to Emmanuel... Both AUM and Faulkner were eliminated from the SSAC softball tourney.

Faulkner’s Jacob Simmons was named the Southern States Athletic Conference’s Pitcher of the Week honor after throwing a shutout against former league rival Berry College in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Harrison Field... Troy senior outfielder Steven Felix was named as one of the nation's top hitters from last week, earning Louisville Slugger player of the week honors... The Alabama State University men’s golf team finished the opening day of the Big Blue Intercollegiate in 14th-place after carding rounds of 309-301 (610) Monday at the par 70, 6,740-yard King’s Creek Golf Club.

Faulkner finishes spring practice with Black-Blue game

Faulkner head football coach Gregg Baker remembers well the feeling he had leaving Cramton Bowl last November after the Eagles final game – a 24-21 upset of Virginia-Wise. He hoped the energy and excitement he and his players were experiencing would carry over into the off-season program and on into spring practice.

His hopes have turned into reality. According to Baker, a more experienced and confident Faulkner football team will take the field at Cramton Bowl on Friday night when the Eagles conclude spring practice with their annual Black & Blue Game.

Tide snaps losing streak with win over Jax State

TUSCALOOSA - Barrett Jones is not your typical college student. He did not make spring break plans for the beach or return home for a laid back week catching up with friends and family.

Instead, Jones headed to Pignom, Haiti, to aid in the relief efforts of a country struck by a devastating earthquake on January 14, 2010.

Rain moves in, Blue-Gray finals move out to Auburn

The 16th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated Notre Dame on Saturday to advance to the championship of the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic, where they will face another Big 12 team, 17th-ranked Oklahoma.

Because of a chance of rain, tournament officials have moved  the championship match to the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn at 10 a.m.

Ansley accepts position on Saban's staff

Following a five-year stint on the coaching staff of the Huntingdon football program, Derrick Ansley has accepted a position with the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.

Ansley, who coached defensive backs for five seasons and served as the Hawks’ Recruiting Coordinator for three years, will join the Crimson Tide as a graduate assistant and work specifically with the secondary.

In the spring of 1996, Trojans football coach Larry Blakeney was worried. Worried sick.

The 1995 Trojans had gone through an undefeated regular season, but had lost 25 seniors who were all major contributors to the success of that team. Entering the spring, Blakeney and the coaching staff was not sure what might lie ahead.

It took much longer than anyone thought it might, but Troy University baseball coach Bobby Pierce picked up his 250th victory as the Trojans mentor on Saturday night as Troy ended a five-game losing skid with an 18-2 win over Bethune-Cookman.

Southern Polytechnic State University completed a weekend sweep of the Auburn University at Montgomery Senators with 7-0 and 9-1 wins at the AUM Baseball Complex.

MT. PLEASANT, S.C.  – The Alabama baseball team got a strong pitching performance from a trio of right-handers and the Tide manufactured enough offense for a 4-0 win over the College of Charleston on a sunny afternoon at Patriots Point Stadium.

HOOVER –Alabama got its first taste of Southeastern Conference action Wednesday night at Regions Park, and the offense responded with a double-digit scoring output en route to a 13-2 win over No. 25 Georgia in a non-conference game on a chilly night in Hoover.

AUBURN - A pair of six-run fourth innings gave Auburn just enough of a cushion to earn 7-6 wins in both games of a doubleheader with Davidson on Wednesday at Plainsman Park. Austin Hubbard earned a save and a win on the afternoon while Cory Luckie returned to a starting spot for the first time since 2008 and responded by striking out a career high nine hitters in a no decision.

TROY - The Troy Trojans (11-4, 2-0) started Sun Belt play on the right foot, taking a doubleheader from Middle Tennessee (2-5, 0-2), 5-0 and 4-2.

Waller's 29 not enough in Tigers' loss at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. - Tay Waller scored 29 points for the second straight game, but Auburn couldn't hold on in an 85-75 loss to Ole Miss in Tad Smith Coliseum on Wednesday. The Rebels outscored the Tigers 63-41 in the second half while shooting 67.9 percent from the field to come back from a 14 point deficit.

Cassie Moore, Montgomery, has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week.

The weather has once again caused a change in the Auburn University at Montgomery baseball schedule.  The Senators are scheduled to play at Trevecca Nazarene this weekend, Friday  and Saturday, but due to snow that has fallen in the Nashville area, those games have now been moved to AUM.

Former Jeff Davis High School star Courtney Fortson of Arkansas was named SEC Player of the Week after he averaged 25.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists  in wins over Georgia and Auburn.

The conference also has announced its 2010 SEC Baseball television schedule, the first under a new 15-year contract with ESPN. The regular-season package will include 46 broadcasts in 2010

Hawks hold off Piedmont; Lady Hawks lose

Junior Adrian Williams scored a season-high 19 points to lead four Huntingdon players in double figures, as the Huntingdon men’s basketball team defeated the top team in the Great South Athletic Conference Piedmont, 87-79, on Saturday at Roland Arena.

Senior Kayla Schuran and junior Ashton Salter each scored 11 points, but the Huntingdon women’s basketball team could not find an answer for the inside presence of Piedmont’s Sada Wheeler, who finished with 29 points, in a 55-40 victory for the Lady Lions on Saturday at Roland Arena.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Courtney Fortson scored eight of his game-high 24 points in overtime to go along with 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead Arkansas to an 82-79 victory over Auburn in Bud Walton Arena on Saturday. TUSCALOOSA - Senior guard Mikhail Torrance scored a game-high 22 points to go along with five assists, but it wasn't enough as Alabama dropped a heartbreaker to Florida, 66-65, Thursday night at Coleman Coliseum. The game was the first meeting between Alabama head coach Anthony Grant and his former mentor, Florida head coach Billy Donovan.

ROME, Ga.-Auburn University at Montgomery outscored Shorter College 10-3 in overtime to defeat the Hawks 79-72.  It was an improbable win for AUM who trailed 39-27 at halftime, and after being outscored 9-0 to start the second half, trailed 48-27 with 15 minutes left in the game.

Shelby Farrer scored 16 points to lead Shorter College to a 65-60 win over AUM in women’s Southern States Athletic Conference basketball action.

Auburn and second-year coach Gene Chizik made the biggest splash, securing a class rated in the top 10 nationally.

"This was a great day for Auburn,” Chizik said. “A year ago at this time, literally a year ago on this day, we came together and we really laid down a vision for what we wanted to try to do for the next recruiting year. New Faulkner head baseball coach Patrick McCarthy opened the season as well as his career this past weekend with a 1-3 start.

McCarthy took over from Brent Barker, who left to resume his athletic director position full time at Faulkner. While able to adequately serve as both head baseball coach and athletic director at Freed-Hardeman for many years, McCarthy is now able to give his full attention to his team.

TUSCALOOSA - To the surprise of no one, Alabama junior linebacker Rolando McClain announced his decision to forgo his senior season and declare for the 2010 NFL draft.

He made the announcement at a press conference Monday in Tuscaloosa.

"I'm going to leave the university pretty satisfied with what I've done here," McClain said.

PASADENA, Calif. - With a 37-21 victory over Texas in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game in Pasadena, Calif., the Alabama Crimson Tide claimed its 13th national championship.

Alabama has won national championships in 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1965, 1966, 1973, 1978, 1979 and 1992. The combined record of Alabama s 13 national champions is 145-6-2.

MOBILE – For the second time in as many seasons, the Troy University Trojans got their post-season hearts broken in the flash of an overtime blocked field goal.

This time, in the 2010 GMAC Bowl, it was sophomore Michael Taylor’s attempt from 31 yards in the second overtime that was blocked by Central Michigan’s Vince Agnew, opening the door for the Chippewas’ game-winning 37-yard field goal in a 44-41 victory over Troy.

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Top-ranked Alabama held its first practice in California in full pads Saturday afternoon at the Costa Mesa High School Sports Complex. The team practiced for two hours under the Southern California sun in preparations for its BCS National Championship Game against the Texas Longhorns.

The team had originally scheduled practices at Orange Coast College but due to an artificial surface, all practices were moved to a nearby high school.

Sitting above the 3,000 or so fans at the HBCU game at Cramton Bowl last Saturday, I had a vision. 

My dream was captured within the confines of my surroundings but with a bigger stage. I saw what I hoped would be the future.

I saw a bowl filled to capacity with fans from all parts of the state to witness a bowl game… an all-star game featuring some of the top players in the country.

AUBURN - Auburn's Brendon Knox said the Tigers had a wake up call during Sunday's loss to Sam Houston State. The Tigers shot a season-high 62 percent from the field to go along with a season-high points in Auburn's 94-78 win over Alabama State on Tuesday.

TUSCALOOSA – The Alabama football team practiced for two hours in shells Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas-Drew Practice Facility, completing its fourth practice for the upcoming BCS National Championship Game against Texas.

No. 1 Alabama (13-0, 8-0 SEC) and No. 2 Texas (13-0, 8-0 Big 12) will meet in the BCS National Championship Game on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.  The game will be nationally televised by ABC Sports.

AUBURN - Junior college transfer Gilberto Clavell scored a career-high 34 points and Corey Allmond added 25 to lead Sam Houston State to a 107-89 victory over Auburn in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum on Sunday. DeWayne Reed led the Tigers with 19 points while Tay Waller had 18 points as the Tigers scored a season-high in points.

Senators look for upset against Alabama State

Auburn University at Montgomery and Alabama State University will meet at the Acadome Saturday at 7 p.m.  It is the 31st meeting between the two local teams.

ASU holds a 23-7 lead in the series that dates back to the 1975-76 season when AUM started playing collegiate basketball.  ASU won that outing 99-68.  The Senators first win in the series came the next season when AUM defeated ASU 99-94.

The Alabama State senior was to spend time with family, open a few presents and maybe, just maybe, take a trip.

But a call came a few weeks ago and changed that itinerary.

NEW YORK – Sophomore running back Mark Ingram etched his named into Crimson Tide lore Saturday by becoming the first Alabama player to win the Heisman Trophy. Ingram was presented the 75th Heisman Memorial Trophy at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square in a live announcement on ESPN. Ingram tallied 1,304 points and 227 first-place votes to beat out Stanford’s Toby Gerhart (1,276 points and 222 first-place votes) in the closest Heisman Trophy voting in history.

TUSCALOOSA – Alabama junior All-American linebacker Rolando McClain is the recipient of the 2009 Dick Butkus Award, presented annually to the nation’s best collegiate linebacker.

McClain was officially presented the award in the Mal M. Moore Athletic Complex on Tuesday morning by NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus at a news conference.  He is the second player in Alabama history to win the award, joining former All-American and Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas in 1988.

ATLANTA – Second-ranked Alabama won its 22nd Southeastern Conference Championship by beating No. 1 Florida, 32-13 with a balanced attack that gave the Tide its first league title since 1999.

ATLANTA - Winning its first SEC football championship since 1999, Alabama claimed its SEC-leading 22nd conference football title when the Crimson Tide defeated Florida in the 2009 SEC Championship Game, 32-13, Saturday at the Georgia Dome. In addition to its 22 SEC Championships, Alabama also won four Southern Conference titles (1924, 1925, 1926 and 1930), giving the school 26 conference football championships.

TUSCALOOSA – Second-ranked Alabama worked for two hours in full pads inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility on Tuesday afternoon as preparations for the 2009 SEC Championship Game continued.

Carlos Dunlap, a 6-6, 290-pound pass rusher, was booked into Alachua County Jail at 5:52 a.m. on Tuesday after Gainesville police found him passed out behind the wheel at a traffic light at around 3:25 a.m. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and was released from jail later Tuesday morning. On Tuesday afternoon, Florida coach Urban Meyer said Dunlap would not play Saturday in the Southeastern Conference championship game.

HUNTSVILLE - Lucas Hargrove recorded his second straight double-double with 22 points and a career-high 13 rebounds as Auburn scored a season high in points with an 87-52 rout of Alabama A&M in Huntsville's Von Braun Center Tuesday. Tay Waller added 13 points in 17 minutes, making 3-of-4 shots from 3-point range in his first game this season after being out with a quad injury.

LAFAYETTE, La. – No one ever said that going undefeated in league play would be easy, and that was certainly the case for the Troy Trojans on Saturday night at Cajun Field.

After surrendering a 24-point lead, the Trojans battled back to take a 48-31 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette to complete a perfect 8-0 run though the Sun Belt Conference to claim the outright league title for a second straight season. It is Troy’s fourth straight Sun Belt crown overall.

When the announcement came that Huntingdon College earned its first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III football playoffs, the euphoria was expected.

Lost in the excitement was the Hawks would be at home for the first round, a first for the school and the city of Montgomery.

The Hawks will make history on Saturday when they play host to Mississippi College in the first round of the D-III playoffs at Samford Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon with the gates opening at 10 a.m.

ATHENS, Ga.---The stats were nearly identical in a thrilling back and forth game but it was Georgia who held on to defeat No. 25 Auburn 31-24 in Sanford Stadium Saturday. The Tigers' Demond Washington returned a 99 yard kickoff return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to tie it at 24 and set an Auburn school record with 202 kickoff return yards but it wasn't enough.

Carlie Ainsworth and Cassie Moore combined for 31 points in leading Auburn University at Montgomery to a 44-35 win over William Carey University.

CLEVELAND, Tenn.—The tournament championship for the Southern States Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament between Lee University and Auburn University at Montgomery could not be decided during 110 minutes of action, so the two teams had to decide the championship on penalty kicks, which Lee won 3-1.

First, there is a game to play against a new program that has won every contest it has played in its maiden season.

Second, there is a very good chance, although not 100 percent, that the Hawks will hear their name called when the 2009 NCAA Division III Football championship playoff brackets are announced on Sunday.

BIRMINGHAM - In a unanimous vote of the Southeastern Conference’s Athletic Directors and with the full support of the Conference’s 12 presidents and chancellors, all violations of SEC Bylaw 10.5.4 will be enforced by suspensions and fines, effective immediately, according to a release by the conference office on Friday.

Now, SEC coaches will face stiffer penalties for complaining about officiating in the media.

AUBURN - The Auburn  Tigers practiced for just under two hours in cool temperatures Wednesday evening as they continued preparations for Saturday's game against the ninth-ranked LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge.

Kariya awarded Army Achievement award

Yuki Kariya, of the Auburn University at Montgomery men’s soccer team, has been awarded the AUM Army Athletic Achievement Award.

During his two years at AUM, Kariya has been a spark for the Senators both on and off the field.  In consecutive matches this season, Kariya had a game-winning goal in double overtime against Lee University and turned around a couple of days later and had the assist to a match winning goal in a win over Southern Wesleyan.

TUSCALOOSA - Thanks to a 246-yard performance against South Carolina on Saturday, Alabama running back Mark Ingram is suddenly among the talk for the Heisman Trophy. He would be the first player in Crimson Tide history to win the award. But the sophomore is more interested in getting his team to Atlanta then Pasadena for the national championship.

Members of the media sat down with Ingram and discussed his recent success and got his insights on the upcoming game against Tennessee.

AUBURN - The Auburn football team returned to the practice fields behind the Athletics Complex Tuesday afternoon, working out for a little more than two hours in shells and shorts as the Tigers continue to prepare for Saturday's game at LSU.

Head coach Gene Chizik stated during his Tuesday press conference that the Auburn coaching staff is looking at all phases of their game for the adjustments needed heading into Baton Rouge this weekend.

BIRMINGHAM - Kentucky was predicted to win the 2010 Southeastern Conference men’s basketball championship in a voting by a select panel of both SEC and national media members. Auburn went through the typical Tuesday routine, opening with special teams work before moving on to position and group drills. After more practice with the special teams, the squad spent much of the latter half of practice working against the scout teams.

Faulkner hosted Brewton-Parker in the opening round of the annual Faulkner Invitational on Friday. The game marked the second conference match between the Southern States Athletic Conference rivals this season. The Lady Barons knocked off the Eagles previously and Faulkner was looking to settle the score. The Eagles grabbed the opening point in set one and never looked back. Faulkner never trailed in the 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 victory.

Sophomore Dallas Thomas scored the only goal of the game with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Huntingdon men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over NAIA foe Brewton-Parker on Wednesday at the Huntingdon Soccer Field.

Agnes Scott scored the lone goal of the contest with less than eight minutes remaining in the second overtime period, as the Huntingdon women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Scotties on Wednesday afternoon.

AUBURN - In a wild, rain-delayed game in which Auburn and West Virginia combined for more than 900 yards, a defensive player made the biggest play.

Craig Stevens intercepted a screen pass by West Virginia and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown with 3:41 left in the fourth quarter, and Auburn defeated the Mountaineers 41-30 Saturday night.

SEWANEE, Tenn. ---- Behind a school-record round of 83 by freshman Coral Nelson, the Huntingdon women’s golf team finished third at the Sewanee Fall Invite, its first fall tournament of the season.

The Lady Hawks carded a two-day total of 737, finishing behind only tournament champion Birmingham-Southern (658) and Piedmont (700). In addition, Huntingdon cut 21 strokes off its first round total, shooint 374 in the opening round and 353 in the final round, respectively.

TUSCALOOSA – The Alabama football team practiced for two hours in full pads inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility Tuesday afternoon, as preparations for the 2009 season opener continue.

As of late Tuesday, Tuscaloosa Police had yet to make an arrest in the Deaderick shooting, which took place late Monday night.

Alabama head baseball coach Jim Wells will retire from his position effective Tuesday and will be replaced immediately by assistant coach Mitch Gaspard, according to published reports.

LAKE WALES, Fla. - With all-conference linebacker Sean Thom and seven other starters having succumbed to cramps and the oppressive heat, the Faulkner defense needed a shot in the arm. And it came from defensive backs Anthony Haywood and Quinton Prothro, who both forced fumbles in the closing minutes as the Eagles escaped with a heart-stopping 17-16 victory over Webber International at Legion Field on Saturday.

Malzahn welcomes change in routine

AUBURN - The Auburn football team inched closer to the 2009 season opener with a practice that lasted more than two hours Wednesday on the Athletics Complex practice fields.

The Tigers worked out in shells under hot and humid conditions, although the temperature dropped as practice wore on. The workout started with special teams drills, then moved to individual and position drills. After more special teams work, the offensive and defensive units worked against the scout teams, before finishing with a two-minute drill.

With less than two weeks before its season-opening contest, the Huntingdon football team continued its preparations for Maryville with a two-hour workout on Tuesday afternoon at Samford Stadium.

The Hawks, who wrapped up their second day of class prior to the workout, operated with their standard schedule, working on fundamentals in the early portion of practice, followed by special teams work, and finishing with 11-on-11 drills.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama football team held its final preseason scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at Bryant-Denny Stadium, running approximately 160 plays in the two-hour practice.


 “The first thing I would say is there was a significant amount of improvement from last week’s scrimmage to this week’s scrimmage,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said following Saturday’s scrimmage.  “In terms of ability to execute, consistency in performance and we made a lot more big plays.”
