The Ponytails team from Montgomery American, which is comprised of 11, 12 and 13 year olds, will travel to Augusta, Ga. for the World Series, which begins Saturday. American drew McEwen, Tenn. for their first-round matchup.

Avery Golden singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Montgomery Gray defeated Suburban West, 5-4, in the Dixie Youth Angels Sub-District championship game at Suburban West Softball Complex Tuesday.

Three pitchers combined to send Wetumpka to the Dixie Youth Angels District 5 tournament with a 10-2 win over Montgomery American in the sub-district tournament at Ed Thompson Park on Tuesday.

Montgomery American, Southern advance in Darlings Sub-district

Claire Donaldson and Vanessa Millar each homered while three different players had three hits in Montgomery American’s 19-8 victory over AUM late Saturday in Dixie Darlings Sub-District tournament action at Montgomery Southern League.

Southern stayed alive in the first game on Saturday, eliminating Montgomery Gray-Red, 18-2.

Pitchers Darci Smith, Mary Beth Slater and Molly Beth Presnell combined for the win in Wetumpka’s 15-5 win over East Montgomery in the Angels Sub-District tournament at Montgomery American on Friday.... AUM defeated Montgomery American, 16-7, to advance to the winner’s bracket of the Angels Sub-District tournament at Ed Thompson Park on Friday.

AUM stayed undefeated with an 18-10 win over Montgomery Gray-Red on Friday in the Darlings Sub-District tournament at Montgomery Southern League at Peter Crump.

TUSCALOOSA – The Hawai’i softball team (48-14) snapped Alabama’s 28-game win streak, dropping the Crimson Tide to 52-10 and forcing game three at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Super Regional. Hawai'i won Game 2, 8-7, after Alabama won 8-0 in the first game.

TUSCALOOSA - The Alabama Crimson Tide (50-9) beat the David Lipscomb University Lady Bisons (50-12), 5-2, in front of 2,439 fans to close out Game 3 of the NCAA Softball Tuscaloosa Regional. It was UA's 26th victory in a row, which ties for the second longest win streak in Tide history.

TUSCALOOSA - The Alabama softball team (49-9) opened NCAA postseason play with a convincing 9-0 victory over Alcorn State (24-25) Friday evening in game two of the Tuscaloosa Regional at the Alabama Softball Complex. With the win the Crimson Tide has run off 25 straight victories, tying the third longest winning streak in school history.

ATLANTA - The Auburn softball team stranded eight runners on base as the Oregon Ducks took advantage of an Auburn error to score the game's only run and defeat the Tigers 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Atlanta Regional Friday afternoon.

Tide top seed in NCAA softball tourney; Auburn headed to Atlanta

TUSCALOOSA - The Alabama softball team was awarded the No. 1 national seed and the top seed in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional on Sunday night. The Crimson Tide was awarded its berth into the NCAA tournament at its selection show Sunday night.

Auburn earned the seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history with a bid to play Oregon in the Atlanta Regional, Friday at Mewborn Field on the campus of Georgia Tech. Game time is at 4:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com.

The Hooper Academy Colts reached new heights in the AISA Class AAA state softball tournament this weekend.

But that reach didn’t include a state championship.

The Colts finished second to Glenwood School, losing to the Gators twice on Saturday, including a 5-4 defeat in the championship game at Lagoon Park.

The Hooper Lady Colts are in unfamiliar territory…. Good territory but unknown.

The Colts got a 3-1 victory over Kingwood Christian in the second game of the day in the AISA Class AAA state softball tourney. It allowed them to move into the winner’s bracket game on Saturday, something the program has never enjoyed.

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Faulkner's Emily Jimmerson allowed only four hits and Scottie Wilkes provided the run support with a grand slam as the Eagles blanked Auburn Montgomery 4-0 here Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Southern States Athletic Conference softball tournament at South Commons Stadium.

Faulkner (27-20) then dropped an 11-0 decision to No. 2 Lee, the SSAC's regular season champion.

The look of emotion on Faulkner head coach Hal Wynn’s face late Saturday afternoon spoke volumes about his day – and his passion for his Eagle softball program. Between games of a key conference doubleheader earlier in the afternoon, Faulkner held a surprise ceremony renaming the school’s softball complex in his honor.

And with his family, his current team and many of his former players by his side, the usually reserved Wynn, who started the Faulkner softball program 19 years ago, watched seemingly in disbelief as the “Wynn Field” sign was unveiled on the scoreboard.

The Huntingdon women’s basketball team’s postseason hopes will come down to one game, Saturday at Agnes Scott, after the Lady Hawks fell to nearby rival LaGrange, 65-46, on Thursday. The men also fell in its final Great South Athletic Conference regular-season game of the year, 66-62, to LaGrange.

The Huntingdon softball team opened its 2010 campaign by dropping a pair of games to NAIA foe Martin-Methodist, falling in the opener 10-1, while dropping the nightcap, 6-1, on Thursday at the Huntingdon Softball Field.

BIRMINGHAM -- In the annual Southeastern Conference coaches preseason poll, the Alabama Crimson Tide has been predicted to win the 2010 SEC Softball title by the league coaches.  After coming off of one of their best seasons in program history and their sixth overall Women’s College World Series appearance, the Crimson Tide led in votes with six out of 11 possible.  Alabama leads the SEC in the national preseason polls ranked No. 2 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls.

Huntingdon men's tennis opens with sweep of Tougaloo


JACKSON, Miss. -- The Huntingdon men's tennis team started the 2009 season right where it left off 2008, cruising to a season-opening 9-0 victory over Tougaloo College on Friday

The win marked the third consecutive season that the Hawks have won their season opener and, in the process, extended their overall win streak to 13 matches.

In the victory, Huntingdon won both a singles and doubles match via default, as Tougaloo played with only five players.

For the Alabama Christian Academy Eagles, revenge was sweet.

The Eagles avenged their 2008 loss in the Class 4A state tournament with a resounding 7-2 win over top-seeded Corner at Lagoon Park on Friday, earning the school’s ninth state championship.

AUM, Faulkner split softball doubleheader

Faulkner University and Auburn Montgomery split a doubleheader on Friday evening.

The Lady Senators blanked the Eagles 2-0 in the opener, but Faulkner made a strong rebound for the 6-1 victory in the nightcap.

Hawks beat Maryville; Bratcher tosses no hitter for Lady Hawks

Senior John Otterson drove in a career-high four runs and freshman John Rice tossed six strong innings to lead the Huntingdon baseball team past Maryville 10-2 on Saturday afternoon at Posey Field.

Junior Kayla Bratcher tossed her first career no-hitter and the Huntingdon softball team pounded out a season-high 14 hits in a 15-0 victory over Spelman in game two of a Great South Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Huntingdon Softball Field.

Richards, Shields named Players of the Week

Two Auburn University at Montgomery athletes have received weekly honors from the Southern States Athletic Conference.

Cody Shields, Panama City, Fla., of the AUM baseball team has been named the SSAC Player of the Week. Shields led AUM to a 2-0 record on the week.

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.—In a rare double-team, doubleheader, Auburn University at Montgomery defeated Southern Wesleyan University 7-3, and then defeated Emmanuel College 9-3.

In softball, AUM and Reinhardt College split a softball doubleheader with Reinhardt winning the first game 5-2 and AUM winning the second 6-1.

Annual Lagoon Park Showcase softball tourney set for the weekend

The annual Lagoon Park Showcase softball tournament is scheduled for this Friday… but only if the weather cooperates.

The tournament features 14 teams this year, most of which are from the River Region. But due to expected inclement weather, the tournament might be in jeopardy.

Richards earns achievement award; men's tennis beats Drury

Brandi Richards of the Auburn University at Montgomery softball program, has received the AUM Army Athletic Achievement Award, given by the AUM Army ROTC.

AUM's men’s tennis team defeated Drury University 7-2 at the AUM Tennis Complex on Monday. Drury is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and came to AUM as the 8th ranked team in the nation in NCAA Division II.

Lady Senators earn split against Shorter

ROME, Ga. – Auburn University at Montgomery and Shorter College split in their first-ever competitions on the softball diamond, with AUM winning the first game 7-3, and losing the second game 4-1. The loss is the first conference defeat for Shorter, as they are now 18-8 overall and 7-1 in SSAC play.

Lady Hawks drop another doubleheader

Despite strong pitching performances from senior Nicole Hill and junior Kayla Bratcher, the Huntingdon softball team dropped its second doubleheader in as many days, falling to West Alabama 8-0 in the opener and 5-3 in the nightcap on Thursday at the Huntingdon Softball Field.

With the losses, the Hawks fall to 4-14-1 on the season, while West Alabama, a Division II school averaging nearly nine runs per game, improved to 24-2 on the year.

Gulf Coast Classic attracts top high school teams

GULF SHORES - Over the course of the next few days, River Region Sports will be on the road with two teams playing in the prestigious Gulf Coast Classic baseball tournament in Gulf Shores.

Both LAMP and Brewbaker Tech are scheduled to play four games during the four days. RRS will cover the different aspects of the tournament including what the players and coaches do on a four-day trip.

Faulkner unloaded early in Game 1 and followed with an offensive explosion late in the second to clinch the series sweep against conference rival Brewton-Parker. The Eagles coasted to an easy 6-0 victory in the opener and sealed the doubleheader with a 6-1 win in the second.

The freshman from Covington, Ga. pitched a perfect game in a 1-0 win over William Penn University this past weekend at the NFCA Lead Off Classic in Panama City, Fla.

Lady Senators sweep Brewton-Parker

Whitney Wyatt hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give AUM a 7-5 win over Brewton-Parker College in the first game of the doubleheader.

The second game was all AUM as the Lady Senators completed the sweep, 10-2.

Catholic softball team ends eight-year frustration with win over St. James

Bill Barranco thought long and hard about when the Catholic Lady Knights last beat St. James in softball.

“I can’t remember the first time we had beaten them,” said the first-year coach. “I don’t know… it may have been several years ago. I wasn’t around.”

Barranco was correct. It had been eight years since it had happened. The Trojans had won eight straight against Catholic over the timeframe.

 Until Monday.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Freshman Caleb Astin capped a 3-for-3 day with a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Huntingdon baseball team defeated Frostburg State, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Armstrong-Shelley Complex.

ATLANTA -- The Huntingdon softball team earned its first win of the 2009 season behind a 3-for-3 performance at the plate and a complete-game effort on the mound by senior Nicole Hill, as it defeated Rhodes 5-2 on Sunday at Cooper Field.

Lady Eagles earn three wins in Faulkner tourney

Faulkner rode the strong pitching of Emily Jimmerson to beat 13th-ranked William Carey 4-2, then exploded with the bats to route Spring Hill 11-3 Saturday in the Faulkner Invitational softball tournament.

The Eagles finished their season-opening event by winning three of four games, matching No. 6 Mobile and No. 11 Lee for the weekend’s best records.

Emily Jimmerson’s impressive performance in the circle lifted Faulkner to a 5-3 victory over Thomas in the Faulkner Invitational Friday afternoon.

Jimmerson scattered seven hits and struck out 10 for the Eagles, but it was how she battled back from a tough start to the bottom of the sixth inning that proved to be the difference.

The Huntingdon softball team dropped a season-opening doubleheader to NAIA foe Martin Methodist on Tuesday, falling 4-3 in Game 1 and 9-2 in the finale, at the Huntingdon Softball Field.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the RedHawks, who are ranked 16th in the NAIA Preseason Poll, improve to 4-0.

MONTGOMERY—Auburn University at Montgomery has not played a softball game yet, but the Southern States Athletic Conference coaches have picked the Lady Senators to finish fifth in the nine-team conference.

The Lady Senators have 20 players on their first-ever roster and plenty of SSAC experience at the helm in coach Christina Wilcoxson, who spent three years at SSAC member Reinhardt College.
