Eagles use late run to beat Spring Hill

Contributed Faulkner used a 14-2 run late in the second half to break open a tight game and then held on for a 71-68 victory Monday night over Spring Hill at Tine Davis Gymnasium. The Badgers had two tries in the final minute to tie the game but Antonio Burch missed a pair of 3-point attempts, allowing the Eagles to escape. The Eagles (8-6) trailed 53-49 with 9:08 left when Oneil Mangal and Randell Moore had two baskets apiece in the decisive run that put Faulkner ahead for good. Spring Hill (7-4) fought back to within two points in the closing minutes, but the Eagles hit free throws down the stretch to hold off the visitors. Faulkner was led by Andrew Boland’s 19 points and 14 rebounds. Langston Williams added 14 for the Eagles, who outrebounded Spring Hill 42-26. Spring Hill was led by Nick Brown’s 14 points and Antonio Burch’s 13 points. Marcus Coleman and Chris Dees added 12 apiece. "I thought at times tonight we played really well, and at times we really struggled," Faulkner head coach Jim Sanderson. "But we won and that’s the bottom line. We do have a lot to work on, however." The Eagles led 21-6 midway through the first half, with Boland scoring Faulkner’s first 12 points to spark the run. The Badgers slowly cut into the lead, with Brown and Owen McNally combining for 17 first-half points to bring Spring Hill to within 36-32 at the break. Faulkner travels to Southern Wesleyan Thursday night at 7. |
