Contributed Ninth-ranked Southern Poly held Faulkner to one field goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half to break open a close game en route to a 70-61 victory Thursday night in a Southern States Athletic Conference clash at Tine Davis Gymnasium. The Runnin’ Hornets (14-2, 6-0 SSAC) led 29-27 at the half, but the 21-7 run to start the final 20 minutes put the game away. The Eagles (10-7, 2-3 SSAC) couldn’t get closer than seven the rest of the way. Faulkner, which made only one of its first 15 second-half shots, made 35 percent of its shots for the game. Faulkner dominated the boards, outrebounding Southern Poly 46-32, but couldn’t take advantage of the extra opportunities. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the basket,” Faulkner head basketball coach Jim Sanderson said. “And we didn’t attack the zone well at all. It was just a frustrating night.” Brent Jennings, who transferred from Faulkner to Southern Poly two years ago, led the Runnin’ Hornets with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Jas Rogers and Xavier Dawson added 14 apiece for Southern Poly. The Eagles were led by Randell Moore and Adam Okechukwu, who both had 15 points. Drew Boland chipped in 11 for Faulkner.
