Faulkner swept in season-opening doubleheader
|
Contributed Faulkner University opened its season with a home series Saturday against Lindenwood University at Harrison Field. The Lions darted out of the gate in game one and never looked back to sweep the series, 6-3 and 4-1. Faulkner’s offense sparked in the bottom of the second in the opener when senior Ryan Reece ripped a two-RBI double. Reece then scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Chris Myles to give the Eagles their lone lead of the day. Junior Jacob Simmons pitched five innings in the first game and gave up nine hits and six runs while striking out three in the loss. Casey Wilson, Andrew Honckenbury and Nate Bowen took care of the final two innings from the mound for the Eagles. Kevin Villarreal was 2-for-2 with a scored run and Reece was 1-for-2 with a run. Lindenwood’s Zach Malawey pitched a complete game striking out 12 while giving up four hits and three runs in the win. The Eagles produced little offense in the second game. The solo hit came by way of junior Justin Jones and the single run came on a walk. Senior Mike Zenko pitched six innings for Faulkner and tallied six strikeouts and allowed five hits and two runs in the loss. Senior Justin Hay pitched the final inning and gave up two hits and a pair of runs. The Lions’ Evan Vinyard allowed only one hit and one run while striking out 11 at the plate for the win. Faulkner will host Martin Methodist College in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. |
