Bonds scores 23 in Lady Hawks’ win

Contributed MACON, Ga. —- Senior Lori Bonds scored a season-high 23 points, while matching a career-high 11 rebounds to post her fifth career double-double to lead the Huntingdon women’s team past Wesleyan, 66-55, and complete a season sweep of the Pioneers on Thursday at Porter Gym. Fellow senior Kayla Schuran also recorded her third double-double of the season by adding 13 points and a team-best 13 rebounds. Junior Kayla Northington chipped in 19 points. Huntingdon (3-15, 2-6 GSAC) raced out to a 12-2 lead in the opening four minutes of the contest, thanks to the play of Northington, who scored 10 points during the stretch, including two 3-pointers. The Lady Hawks took their largest lead of the half, 25-12, with 8:28 left in the period, but the Pioneers (2-13, 0-10 GSAC) cut into the margin with a 16-6 spurt to close the half, leaving Huntingdon ahead by three points at the half. Bonds and Northington helped the Lady Hawks put the game away with a 16-3 run to open the second half. During the six minute span, Bonds scored eight points, while Northington chipped in two more treys. Huntingdon extended its lead to 20 points on three occasions, including as late into the contest as 5:27 remaining, after a lay-up by freshman Devin Douglas. Bonds finished with her second 20-point game of the season and her 10th of her career. The 23 points tied for the third-best single-game performance in the career for the member of the Huntingdon 1,000 point club. For the contest, the Lady Hawks converted 23-of-66 shots (34.8 percent), while Wesleyan knocked down just 34.9 percent. Huntingdon also hit 14-of-17 shots from the free throw line and dished out 17 team assists. Douglas paced the squad with four assists, while Bonds, junior Ashton Salter and sophomore Whitney Toole added three each. Bre’ Solmone paced the Pioneers with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Ciara Walker scored a team-best 19 points. Huntingdon will return to action on Saturday, when it hosts Piedmont in a Great South Athletic Conference doubleheader with the men’s squad.
