Here is a brief look at each team from the River Region that will open football playoff action on Friday. Teams are listed in alphabetical order beginning with teams in the AHSAA and followed by teams in AISA.

AHSAA

Alabama Christian Academy Eagles

Class: 4A
Coach: Kenny Simpson
Season Record (Region finish): 7-3 (2nd)
First-round opponent: Thomasville
Best regular season win: Ashford – came after emotional victory over St. James
Worst loss: Opp – difference in first and second place finish in the region
All-time playoff record: 7-12 (12 appearances)
Championships: None
Best playoff finish: Quarterfinals (1989, 1990)
Playoff outlook: No team in the River Region that earned a first-round home game could draw a tougher opponent. Thomasville could have easily won the title in Region 1. The Eagles hope to have an element of surprise on their side but that might be asking too much.
How far will they go? FIRST ROUND

G.W. Carver Wolverines

Class: 5A
Coach: Al Pogue
Season Record (Region finish): 9-1 (2nd)
First-round opponent: John Carroll
Best Regular season win: at Demopolis – proved that Carver was still on top in the region along with Greenville
Worst loss: Greenville – struggled with the Tigers’ spread offense
All-time playoff record: 12-18 (18 appearances)
Championships: None
Best playoff finish:  Semifinals (2004, 2008)
Playoff outlook: The Wolverines still have the bad taste left from just missing a trip to the state championship game from a year ago. This is a different team that has one of the more unheralded quarterbacks in the state and a defense that has improved each week. The loss to Greenville in their first region game of the season was a wakeup call. They make the most of a second chance.
How far will they go? FINALS.

Robert E. Lee Generals

Class: 6A
Coach: Larry Ware
Season Record (Region finish): 4-6 (4th)
First-round opponent: at Auburn
Best Regular season win:  at Benjamin Russell – began the road to returning to the playoffs
Worst loss: Wetumpka – best chance to pull off an upset ended with a turnover.
All-time playoff record: 46-20 (25 appearances)
Championships: 14 (5 since 1966, the first year of playoffs)
Playoff outlook: Lee reached its short-term goal of returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. But Larry Ware wants more than a token visit to the postseason. But that’s about all he will get.
How far will they go? FIRST ROUND.

Montgomery Academy Eagles

Class: 3A
Coach: Chris Cournoyer
Season Record (Region finish): 6-4 (3rd)
First-round opponent: at Gordo
Best regular season win: Montevallo – overcame a two-touchdown deficit to win in overtime
Worst loss: Dadeville – Chance for home game in first round gone with loss
All-time playoff record: 25-24 (25 appearances)
Championships: 1 (1987)
Playoff outlook: The Eagles have beaten the teams they should have and lost games they were not expected to win. Considering the loss of their starting quarterback (Dustin Weil), MA has performed well. A win past the first round will be a bonus.
How far will they go?
SECOND ROUND.

Prattville Lions

Class: 6A
Coach: Jamey Dubose
Season Record (Region finish): 8-2 (1st)
First-round opponent: Dothan
Best regular season win: Wetumpka – Despite first-half struggles, won going away against the region’s second-best team.
Worst loss: at North Gwinnett – struggled with 128 yards in offense.
All-time playoff record: 40-17 (21 appearances)
Championships: 4 (1984, 2006, 2007, 2008)
Playoff outlook: Prattville has been a bit of an enigma this season, winning easily against the likes of Lee, Lanier and Foley but struggling against Stanhope Elmore. The loss to North Gwinnett was an upset but losing to Don Bosco was not. Still, the Lions are the defending champions and looked like they got their swagger back in the last couple of weeks of the regular season. Defense still wins championships and Prattville still plays it best in the south.
How far will they go? FINALS.

St. James Trojans

Class: 4A
Coach: Karl Smeltzer
Season Record (Region finish): 5-5 (4th)
First-round opponent: at UMS-Wright
Best Regular season win: Opp – last second touchdown is still being talked about around the River Region
Worst loss: ACA – began the downward spiral of the second half of the season
All-time playoff record: 7-14 (7 appearances)
Championships: None
Best playoff finish: Quarterfinals (1985, 2003)
Playoff outlook: Finishing on a four-game losing streak does not bode well for the Trojans, who struggled offensively in the second half of the season. Facing UMS-Wright in the first round doesn’t help matters. What began as a promising season ends in disappointment.
How far will they go? FIRST ROUND.

St. Jude Pirates

Class: 2A
Coach: Roberto Reed
Season Record (Region finish): 7-3 (3rd)
First-round opponent: at Hale County
Best regular season win: R.C. Hatch – began a six-game winning streak
Worst loss: Reeltown – ended hopes of a region title
All-time playoff record: 4-6 (6 appearances)
Championships: None
Best Playoff finish: Quarterfinals (1998)
Playoff outlook: The Pirates were competitive for most of the season but ended with two losses to the region’s best teams. Hale County provides a stiff test but St. Jude may have an advantage in playing some of the better teams in 2A this season. A win in the first round probably sets up a tough game against Pickens County.
How far will they go? SECOND ROUND.

Stanhope Elmore Mustangs

Class: 6A
Coach: Jeff Foshee
Season Record (Region finish): 5-5 (3rd)
First-round opponent: at Central-Phenix City
Best Regular season win: R.E. Lee – proved Mustangs could win in come-from-behind fashion
Worst loss: at Prattville – had the Lions on the ropes but kicking game let down
All-time playoff record: 29-29 (29 appearances)
Championships: None
Best playoff finish: Semifinals (1977, 1979, 1980, 1998, 2004)
Playoff outlook: Due to its talented skills players, the Mustangs might the most dangerous team in the 6A playoffs. But in its first-round game, they will have to outscore an equally talented squad in Central-Phenix City, which beat the Mustangs by three points back in September. A win in the first round might be the medicine needed to ignite this team, but Prattville awaits.
How far will they go? SECOND ROUND.

Tallassee Tigers

Class: 5A
Coach: Rodney Dollar
Season Record (Region finish): 8-2 (1st)
First-round opponent: Gulf Shores
Best Regular season win: at Valley – come-from-behind win clinched region title
Worst loss: at Chilton County – defense gave up most points in a game this season (43)
All-time playoff record: 11-16 (16 appearances)
Championships: 2 in non-playoff years (1954, 1961)
Best playoff finish: Semifinals (1984, 1999)
Playoff outlook: The Tigers have one of the stronger running games in the state and that usually proves to be a plus in the playoffs. Defense has been inconsistent but the Tigers have looked better in the second half of the season. Beating a solid first-round opponent should catapult Tallassee deep into the second season.
How far will they go? SEMIFINALS.

Trinity Presbyterian Wildcats

Class: 3A
Coach: Randy Ragsdale
Season Record (Region finish): 9-0 (1st)
First-round opponent: Aliceville
Best Regular season win: Dadeville – Solid 4th quarter to secure top spot in the region
Worst loss: None
All-time playoff record: 23-21 (23 appearances)
Championships: 1 (2003)
Playoff outlook: The Wildcats are poised to make a run for the state championship but the road will be difficult. Getting to Tuscaloosa means the defeat of (more than likely) Cordova and T.R. Miller or Pike County and there are plenty of teams in the north who are capable of winning it all. But Trinity has a solid balance on offense and is underrated defensively. The Cats surprise a few people but not quite enough to win it all. How far will they go? FINALS.

Wetumpka Indians

Class: 6A
Coach: Chad Anderson
Season Record (Region finish): 6-4 (2nd)
First-round opponent: Enterprise
Best Regular season win: Stanhope Elmore – eventually decided the second seed in the region
Worst loss: at Northview – lost to a team that was overmatched and not as talented.
All-time playoff record: 11-19 (19 appearances)
Championships: None
Best playoff finish: Semifinals (1995)
Playoff outlook: The Indians have struggled against non-region opponents and will face a very good team in the first round.  Their 1-3 record outside the region doesn’t bode well for the playoffs.
How far will they go? FIRST ROUND

AISA

Autauga Academy Generals

Class: AA
Coach: Mike Sims
Season Record (Region finish): 3-7 (4th)
First-round opponent: at Monroe Academy
Best Regular season win: at Evangel Christian – clinched the playoff spot
Worst loss: Prattville Christian - first game of the season was a sign of what was to come.
All-time playoff record: 16-16 (19 appearances)
Championships: 3 (1978, 1983, 1999)
Playoff outlook:  Autauga enters with the worst record of any team in the playoffs – that’s in either association. Any other year, the Generals would not be in the postseason but that proves the weakness of the lower half of the region.
How far will they go? FIRST ROUND

Edgewood Academy Wilcats

Class: AA
Coach: Bobby Carr
Season Record (Region finish): 8-1 (1st)
First-round opponent: Pickens Academy
Best Regular season win: Lowndes Academy – continued mastery over best regional opponent
Worst loss: at Fort Dale – couldn’t repeat performance from 2008
All-time playoff record: 9-14 (15 appearances)
Championships: 1(2008)
Playoff outlook: Southern Academy looks to be the only real roadblock for the Wildcats and their quest for a second-consecutive title. That and the assumptive attitude that they will make the championship round without a fight. Here’s guessing Carr will not let that happen.
How far will they go? AA STATE CHAMPS

Lowndes Academy Rebels

Class: AA
Coach: Art Sullivan
Season Record (Region finish): 7-3 (3rd)
First-round opponent: at Southern Academy
Best Regular season win: at Hooper Academy – beating an arch rival always rates higher than most victories.
Worst loss: Edgewood Academy – reminder that the Wildcats still rule the region
All-time playoff record: 20-20 (22 appearances)
Championships: 2 (1968, 1977)
Playoff outlook: Lowndes has been an offensive juggernaut at times this year but in games against superior opponents, it has not had as much success. The Rebels have beaten the teams they were supposed to but not had an upset this season. No reason to see a change in the postseason.
How far will they go? FIRST ROUND

Macon-East Montgomery Knights

Class: AAA
Coach: Glynn Lott
Season Record (Region finish): 8-2 (4th)
First-round opponent: at Morgan Academy
Best Regular season win: Fort Dale Academy – won the game on a 90-plus yard drive in the final minute
Worst loss: at Pike Liberal Arts – was the difference in winning the region and finishing fourth.
All-time playoff record: 8-8 (9 appearances)
Championships: 1 (2000)
Playoff outlook: The Knights may have finished fourth in the region but they are better than their seed. They beat the favorite, Fort Dale, but lost to the other two contenders. More than likely, the champion will come from this region. Macon-East gets to Troy but comes up short.
How far will they go? FINALS

Prattville Christian Academy Panthers

Class: AAA
Coach: Grey Powell
Season Record (Region finish): 7-4 (4th)
First-round opponent: at Fort Dale Academy
Best Regular season win: Tuscaloosa Academy – set in motion the Panthers’ first berth in the playoffs
Worst loss: Marengo Academy - Hurt chances of a first-round home playoff game
All-time playoff record: 0-0
Championships: None
Playoff outlook: PCA would like to make the most of its first playoff game but the task of defeating the favorite is daunting. The Panthers struggled in the first meeting this season with the size and depth of Fort Dale. Not much has changed since September.
