Lady Hawks drop conference opener; men lose to Emory

Contributed ATLANTA — Senior Lori Bonds scored a game-high 19 points, but Spelman had five players score in double figures as the Jaguars defeated the Lady Hawks 80-62 in each team’s Great South Athletic Conference opener Tuesday evening. Bonds was joined in double-digits by junior Latarial Williams, who added 10 points. Bonds also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Huntingdon dug an early hole in the contest, hitting just 25 percent of its shots in the first half and trailed at the half 41-18. The Lady Hawks battled and hit 12-of-19 shots (63.2 percent) in the second half, but the first-half deficit was too much to overcome. Spelman was led by Shanda Kennedy with 18 points, while Jessica Reagans and Monique Shelton each added 12 points. Mariah Coggins and Tiana Welch both chipped in 11 points. The Lady Hawks also struggled to take care of the ball, committing 32 turnovers, compared to just 16 by the Jaguars. Huntingdon will look to rebound on Sunday, November 29, when it hosts Birmingham-Southern at 4 p.m. Men lose to Emory Despite four players scoring in double figures, the Huntingdon men’s basketball team could not overcome a cold-shooting second half, as it fell to Emory 91-82 on Tuesday evening at Roland Arena. The Hawks (1-3) led by four at the intermission, but hit just 33.3 percent of their second half shots as the Eagles (2-0) outscored them 51-38 in the second period. During the second half, Emory converted 13-of-29 shots, good for 44.8 percent, while also hitting 22-of-26 free throws. Huntingdon was led by senior Leon Frazier with a game-high 20 points, his third consecutive game with 20-plus points. Fellow senior Reggie Sprouse added 19, while junior Ephraim Hudson chipped in 12 points. Freshman Adrian Williams finished with 11 points in just 16 minutes. Emory also placed four in double figures, paced by Corey Spraggins, who finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Greven and Austin Claunch each recorded 18 points. For the game, Huntingdon recorded 40 points in the paint and 29 points off of 22 Eagles turnovers. Emory held a four-rebound advantage on the glass and finished the game 29-of-59 (49.2 percent) from the floor. Huntingdon hit just 39.7 percent from the field, knocking down 27-of-68 shots. The Hawks will look to snap their two-game skid on Sunday, when they host the University of Dallas at Roland Arena. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. |
