(Photo contributed) By Michael Butler With rumors floating about, Tallassee Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Rodney Dollar said he looks forward to the future with the Tigers. Dollar hails from Central Phenix City High School. Red Devils head football Coach Ron Nelson is retiring this season. Dollar’s alma mater has taken notice of one of its own. "We’ve been talking for a little over a year now about the job opening and coming home, but I’m just not interested in going anywhere," Dollar said. "I’ve put too much into here, and my wife loves it here. So, we’ve decided we’re going to stay right here. After his third season, Dollar is 20-12 with back-to-back playoff appearances at the state’s smallest 5A program. His Tigers claimed the 2009 Region 2 championship before losing to Spanish Fort in the first round of the playoffs. "We’ve got a good group of seniors coming back,” he said. “They were eighth graders when I first came here. I enjoy the people that I’ve gotten to know here," he said. "I’m going to be here for quite a while, if they’ll have me. Dollar talked highly of his hometown and its football program’s high expectations. "It’s a nice place,” he said. “It’s a big-time school athletically. They’re graduating 31 seniors. It’s not going to be the best scenario to jump in there. People of Phenix City expect you to win every year. It’s a tough region. I’ve already done all the dirty work here. I don’t want to go do it anywhere else." Dollar stated that he did not expect a counter offer from Tallassee. "Times are tough right now with proration. Everybody’s been fantastic here giving everything we can to compete in athletics." As for the ultimate goal, Dollar wants to be more than just a playoff team. "I think injuries kept us from going at least three rounds this year," he said. "We had just a good a chance as anybody else. I’m happy, but not with being 8-3. I definitely want to go farther." |
