Brew Tech boys win South Regional; Brew Tech girls, MA girls lose

Harrell scored 24 points and Giovanni Smith scored 20 points to lead Brewbaker Tech to a 52-44 victory over Andalusia in the Class 4A South Regional championship at the Mitchell Center on the University of South Alabama campus on Saturday. Brew Tech (23-5) will play Columbia at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the BJCC Arena. It will be the Rams’ first-ever trip to the finals. “I can’t say enough how proud I am of this team,” Brew Tech coach Chauncey Shines said. “We’ve work so hard but we want to finish what we set out to do.” Harrell, a University of Virgimina signee, slashed his way through the Andalusia defense, which traditionally is one of the best in the state. He finished 9-for-19 from the field “Andalusia has so much tradition and I told our guys we had to go out and be loose and play like we are capable,” Brew Tech coach Chauncey Shines said. “We were able to make some key shots down the stretch and play defense like we are capable.” The Brew Tech girls were not as fortunate, losing to Thomasville, 66-49, on Saturday in the girls 4A South Regional final. Tabitha Bradshaw led the Lady Rams (20-8) with 20 points. MA girls falter Sumter County earned the Class 3A Central regional title with a 57-46 victory over Montgomery Academy at Alabama State on Saturday. After falling behind by as many as 15 points in the first half, MA rallied to pull within a point in the fourth. “We never gave up,” MA coach Glenn Sylvest said. “Sumtrer County has a terrific team. We fought back late. I have nothing but praise for this team.” Jamesha Watkins finished with 30 points, including 19 in the first half. She had 11 points in the fourth quarter to lift Sumter County. Dana Smith led MA (24-6) with 15 points while Miah Brooks had 11 points. |
