AUM NEWS: Softball team enjoys win over Huntingdon; baseball loses to Columbus State

Contributed The win completed a double-header sweep as the Lady Senators won game one, 4-1. Morgan Dodd started the scoring in the second game with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning staking Richards to an early lead. Jessica Perry pitched the fifth inning in relief and had a strikeout to finish the game. Monica Hatcher had two hits along with five RBIs, Shea Driggers had three hits and two RBIs and Stacin Halverson finished with two hits with one RBI. Danielle Ryan (4-0) picked up the win in game one, only allowing six hits while striking out eight. AUM scored two runs in the first inning on a triple from Whitney Wyatt and a double from Taylor Burt. The Lady Hawks would answer back when LeighAnn Floyd scored their only run at the top of the third inning making the score 2-1. The Lady Senators finished the game, score two more runs late in the game making the final 4-1. The Lady Senators now improve to 8-0 on the season while Huntingdon College falls to 2-4. AUM goes on the road to Huntsville, Ala for its next game, to play University Alabama-Huntsville Friday Feb. 26th. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. Columbus State beats Senators in baseball Jason Rogers had two home runs and five RBI to lead Columbus State University to an 11-9 win over Auburn University at Montgomery. Things seemed to be going AUM’s way as the Senators led 6-1 after two innings of play. AUM scored four runs in the first, fueled by Jacob Salter’s homerun on the first pitch in the bottom of the first. With the Senators holding the five run lead, the visitors pushed across single runs in the third and fifth, before exploding for four runs in the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. CSU starter David Lane struggled out of the gate allowing the six runs in the first two innings, but settled down and did not allow the Senators to score again. Robby Nettles came in for CSU in the seventh but gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth. His defense did not help him as CSU committed two errors leading to the three unearned runs. Jared Fonseca (2-1) came on in relief of Chase Patterson in the ninth inning. Eric Skinner led off the inning with a bloop single over third base and Jake Lepchitz got another single off the glove of AUM shortstop Jorden Johnson. With two men on base, Fonseca struck out the next two batters. Eric Weiss then blooped a single into right field over the AUM second baseman to score Skinner. That led to Rogers two-out, two strike homerun to straight ahead centerfield for the game winner. Wade Dudley (1-0) picked up the win in relief, retiring the Senators in order in the ninth. Ryan Lewis, Weiss and Skinner all finished the game with two hits for CSU. Bruce Alter had three hits and three RBI to lead the Senators offense and Tanner Williams had two hits. AUM is now 7-7 on the year while CSU moves to 10-2. AUM will jump into conference action this weekend as they travel to Shorter College. Friday’s single game begins at 1 p.m. while the two teams will play a double-header on Saturday beginning at noon. |
