AUM NOTES: Baseball team splits with Trevecca; women’s hoops beats Columbia

Contributed Auburn University at Montgomery and Trevecca Nazarene University split in a baseball double-header with Trevecca winning game one 2-1, and the Senators coming back to take the second game 12-9. Game two saw the Senators trail 9-6 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, when AUM broke loose for six runs. AUM jumped on TNU relievers Blake Payton and Jerry Young for seven hits before the first out was recorded. After AUM took the lead Ben Francis set the visitors down without allowing a hit and striking out six as he picked up his first win in relief. Sam Judah had three hits and Anthony Kopacz had two hits and three RBI, while Brooks Glover had two RBI on two hits. Game one was a pitching duel as AUM through four pitchers and TNU put two on the mound. The game was scoreless heading into the seventh, but TNU scored a run in the top of the inning, and AUM came back to even the score at one in the bottom of the inning. TNU was able to push across a run on a two out single from Zach Sutton, scoring Edwin Borbon with what turned out to be the winning run. Caleb Longshore (1-0) picked up the win for TNU, going the final three innings and allowing one run on three hits. Jared Fonseca (1-1) picked up the loss allowing only the one run in three innings of work. Todd Cherry had two hits and Tanner Williams had a pinch hit and drove in the Senators only run for the game. AUM moves to 7-6 overall and Trevecca is now 2-5. The Senators are back in action Tuesday when they host Columbus State at 3 p.m. Women’s basketball beats Columbia Three players scored in double figures, led by Carlie Ainsworth’s 19 points to lift Auburn University at Montgomery to a 72-44 win over Columbia College in the Southern States Athletic Conference play. The game was the final regular-season home game for three seniors, Melanie Gess, Adrienne Marsh and Kala Smith. The game also represented AUM’s Pink Zone game which represents the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) initiative to raise awareness for breast cancer. Both teams scored on their first possession, but the Lady Senators would take the lead after Ainsworth hit the first of her five three-point baskets to give AUM a 5-2 lead, which they would never relinquish. The Lady Senators continued to play solid defense holding the Fighting Koalas scoreless for over 10 minutes in the first half and holding them to 13 percent shooting. By the time the visitors hit two free throws with 3:49 left in the half, AUM had built a 28-9 lead. Cassie Moore’s field goal with three minutes left gave AUM its largest lead of the half at 32-9. Columbia would close out the first half scoring with four points to cut the deficit to 32-13 at the break. AUM never slowed down in the second half, shooting 52 percent and took its largest lead of the afternoon at 72-36 when Gess hit a three-point field goal with 3:56 left in the game. The three-point field goal is the only three-point basket of her colligate career. Gess finished the game with 15 points and tied for game-high honors in rebounds with 11. Moore chipped in 10 points and she also grabbed 11 rebounds and had seven blocked shots. Kiara Fefie had 12 points to lead the Fighting Koalas and Emmie Bland pitched in 10 points. Kirsten Robinson added eight points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Senators improve to 13-13 overall and 8-6 in the conference, while Columbia falls to 3-22 overall and remains winless in the conference at 0-15. AUM goes on the road to Mt.Vernon, Ga. for its next game, to play Brewton-Parker College Thursday Feb. 25th. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m. |
