Baker pleased with second class of signees

Faulkner head football coach Gregg Baker was pleased with the 16 student-athletes the Eagles signed to football scholarships on Wednesday. It’s a good class that could be getting even better in the next couple of weeks.

“Before it’s over with, we feel like the guys we’ll bring in before the fall will not only make us better on the field but will represent our university in a positive manner, both academically and athletically,” Baker said. “We still have a lot of offers out there that we’ll follow closely up on after the DI signings today. We expect some great things soon.”

One of the top signees, according to Baker, is running back Darius Bates out of Garland High School in Garland, Texas. The 5-8, 160-pound speedster is expected to step in and compete for playing time immediately.

“Darius is elusive and fast,” Baker said. “And despite his size, he’s thick. I believe we’ll be counting on him this fall.”

Faulkner will have holes to fill on the defensive line, and Baker thinks the situation has been addressed with the early signees. Matt Enyart is a 6-4, 237-pound transfer from the College of the Siskiyous in California and could play a big part in the rebuilding up front, Baker says.

“We think Matt is ready to play right now,” said Baker, who also believes that 5-11, 215-pounder Taylor Bone, who comes to Faulkner from Morgan Academy in Selma, could contribute early.

Baker also believes that strong safety Antjuan Curry, a transfer from Hartnell College in California, will make his presence felt early. The 6-0, 210-pounder is originally from Mobile.

“This guy is a destroyer, I’m telling you,” he said. “He will flat out come and get you.”
