Eagles sweep Emmanuel in baseball, swept by Brenau in softball

Contributed After blasting Emmanuel on Friday, Faulkner closed the series sweep with a pair of wins in Saturday’s doubleheader, 13-1 (5 inn.) and 10-8. The Eagles extend their winning streak to nine games after routing the Lions and jumped to second place in the SSAC behind No. 5 Lee. Faulkner scored in every at bat in Game 1 including seven runs in the second inning. The Eagles’ offense was spearheaded by Michael Clayton who had his second home run in as many games, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two scored runs. Chris Myles was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a scored run. Other notables include Justin Jones who was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Justin Maynard who went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. Kenny Miramontes was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Jonathan Gober was 1-for-1 with an RBI and two runs. Jacob Simmons (2-1) picked up the win with an excellent defensive effort. He tallied four strikeouts and gave up only six hits and one earned run. The Eagles found themselves trailing early in the second game, but posted 10 unanswered runs in five innings to secure the win. Johnny Montoya (2-1) got the win in game two. The senior recorded three strikeouts while giving up five hits and five earned runs. Andrew Hockenbury threw just under an inning and allowed two hits and three earned runs. Justin Hay faced the final four batters and gave up three hits and got the save. Gober delivered at the plate for Faulkner in game two going 3-for-3 with a home run. The junior had four RBIs and three scored runs. Myles was equally impressive going 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and a double. Ronald Tarvin finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Kevin Villarreal was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Faulkner moves to 14-4 on the year and 3-0 in the SSAC for their best start since 2008. The Eagles take on Talladega in doubleheader on the road Tuesday beginning at noon. Softball opens conference play with two losses Faulkner opened SSAC play against the Brenau Golden Tigers, losing 2-1 in the opener, and 10-1 in five innings in the nightcap. Faulkner held an early lead in game one, but a Brenau homer in the fourth sealed the win for the visitors. After playing solid to start the day, Faulkner fell apart in the second game. The Golden Tigers posted 12 hits and scored 10 runs, none of which were earned. The Eagles had just six hits in two games. Erin Pierce, Shauna Suttle, Cynthia Batchelor, Jessi Palmer and Scottie Wilkes were all 1-for-3 in the first game. Pierce had an RBI and Suttle a scored run. Emily Jimmerson pitched the opener for the Eagles. The junior gave up six hits and two earned runs, while logging a pair of strikeouts. Junior Katy Wiggins threw for just under two innings and gave up three hits and tallied two strikeouts in game two. Missy Duke carried the remainder of the game allowing nine hits, while putting four away at the plate. Duke also had Faulkner’s lone hit. The Eagles drop to 2-5 on the year and are 0-2 in the league. Faulkner will host No. 12 Shorter in an SSAC doubleheader on Friday, March 5, beginning at 2 p.m. |
