FAULKNER TOURNEY: AUM opens strong, Faulkner winless after first day

Combined Reports Faulkner University dropped its first two games of its own tournament, falling first to No. 23 Savannah College of Art and Design 5-2 and followed with a tight loss to Thomas University 3-2. In the Lady Eagles’ first loss, SCAD opened with a two run lead in the first inning, but Faulkner answered with a run of their own in the same inning and tied the event in the fifth when Scottie Wilkes ripped an RBI single. Junior Emily Jimmerson (0-2) had two strikeouts while giving up six hits and five earned runs in the loss. Wilkes finished the game 1-for-2 with an RBI and Haley Munroe was 2-for-3. Against Thomas, Faulkner jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Night Hawks scored two of their three runs off a wild pitch and a wild throw to first in the win. Senior pitcher Samantha Belden (0-1) gave up five hits and one earned run in the loss. She finished the game with three strikeouts. Shauna Suttle had an excellent offensive performance going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Munroe was 1-for-2. The Eagles dropped to 1-3 on the year and will play back-to-back games Saturday evening at the Faulkner softball complex. The Eagles will take on Reinhart (6-0) at 5 p.m. followed by Spring Hill (0-2) at 7 p.m. Lady Senators start strong in tourney AUM pulled off two wins at the Faulkner Invitational Tournament, including a 1-0 upset of sixth-ranked William Carey University. Stephanie Baxley (2-0) picked up the win against William Carey, pitching five innings and allowed only one hit while striking out eight. All-American Brandi Richards came in and picked up her first save of the season recording the final six outs without allowing a hit. The Lady Senators scored the only run they would need in the first inning when Monica Hatcher got a hit and was able to come around and score the lone run. In the first game of the tournament, AUM scored four late runs to pull off a 4-0 win over Spring Hill College. Whitney Wyatt had three hits including a homerun to lead the AUM offense. Joanna Reynolds also had three hits and an RBI and Alli Converse also had three hits. Hatcher had a hit and drove in a run. Danielle Ryan (2-0) went the distance allowing five hits with three strikeouts. The Lady Senators (4-0) will face two more ranked teams tomorrow when they face 23rd ranked Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD) at 11 a.m. followed by a game against 18th ranked University of Mobile at 3 p.m. Other Day 1 Results: No. 12 Shorter won convincingly over No. 6 William Carey 4-1 and followed with a 9-4 victory over Thomas. No. 16 Lee secured wins over two ranked opponents. The Flames defeated No. 23 SCAD 6-5 in eight innings and then closed Day 1 with a 4-2 victory over No. 18 Mobile. Reinhardt is also making a statement at the Invitational. The unranked Eagles upset No. 18 Mobile 1-0 to start the day and followed with 5-0 win over Thomas. The Invitational continues tomorrow at 9 a.m. with games at both Faulkner and neighboring Alabama Christian Academy. |
