HAWKS NOTES: Players earn weekly honors; Sprouse, Bonds all conference

Huntingdon senior softball team members Meagan Jackson and Kayla Bratcher, as well as baseball senior Kyle Eller have all been recognized by the Great South Athletic Conference office as Player’s of the Week, for the week ending Feb. 21.

Jackson was honored as the GSAC’s Player of the Week in softball after batted .556 in four games, with five hits, including a double. She had an on-base percentage of .600. In the field, Jackson handled eight putouts and 12 assists without an error.

On the mound, Bratcher was selected league Pitcher of the Week after finishing the week with a 1-1 record with a save. Bratcher tossed 15.0 innings during the week, striking out four and posting a 3.60 earned run average in three appearances.

Eller was selected the conference baseball Player of the Week after helping the Hawks to a perfect 4-0 record last week. In the four games, he batted .529 with nine hits, scored 10 runs and had 13 RBIs. Eller had a home run, a triple and four doubles included in his hits. In the field, he had two assists from his outfield position. Eller also had a 1.059 slugging percentage.

The Huntingdon baseball and softball teams will each return to action on Saturday in Birmingham. The baseball team will take on Arcadia at 11:30 a.m., and Mount St. Joseph’s at 3 p.m. The softball team will face Berry at noon, followed by Birmingham-Southern at 2 p.m.

Bonds, Sprouse named all conference

For the third consecutive season, Huntingdon’s Lori Bonds has been named to the Great South Athletic Conference’s All-Conference Team, the league announced on Thursday.

This season, Bonds averaged 12.5 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per contest, both of which ranked eighth in the GSAC and either led or was second on the Lady Hawks. Bonds also ranked in the top-10 among all league members in assists and steals during her final season.

In 25 games during the 2009-10 season, Bonds scored in double figures in 15 contests, including a season-high 23 points at Wesleyan. She also added four double-doubles, including matching a career-high with 11 boards in the contest against the Pioneers. In her final collegiate game, she recorded 12 points and snagged a career-high 10 steals.

During her career, Bonds appeared in 104 career games, earning the starting nod in 100. Earlier this season became a member of the Huntingdon 1,000 career point club and scored 1,291 points, posted 485 rebounds, recorded 225 assists and added 178 steals. She scored in double figures 66 times, including a career-high 26 against Tennessee-Temple during the 2007-08 season.

In addition to her on-court accolades, Bonds was also recognized on the league’s All-Academic team for the second straight season. In order to be considered for the all-academic team, a player must be classified as a sophomore or higher and maintain a grade point average of 3.25 or better.

Individual award winners for the 2009-10 season for the Great South Athletic Conference included Maryville’s Alison Harmon as the Player of the Year, LaGrange’s Katie Covington as the Freshman of the Year, and the Panthers’ Mark Isenhour as Coach of the Year.

Senior Reggie Sprouse has been named to the Great South Athletic Conference All-Conference team for the second straight season.

Sprouse led the Hawks in scoring with a mark of 13.4 points per game, while ranking second in rebounds per contest at 5.0. Both his scoring and rebounding mark ranked in the top-10 among all GSAC players, while his field goal percentage of .464 ranked sixth in the league. He also finished in the top-10 in the league in assists and free throw percentage, while ranking second in the conference in steals per game with 1.9.

The Montgomery native scored in double figures in 14 games, including a season-high 24 points and nine rebounds at Piedmont. He also scored 24 points against Trinity College, while finishing with 23 points against Birmingham-Southern. Sprouse added atleast one steal in 18 of 21 games, including a season-high five against Rust and Covenant.

In addition to announcing the all-conference teams, the league also announced its all-academic squad. Seniors Heath Miller and Chris Roberts, as well as junior Ephraim Hudson were each recognized for their academic achievement. In order to be considered for the all-academic team, a player must be classified as a sophomore or higher and maintain a grade point average of 3.25 or better.

Individual award winners for the 2009-10 season for the Great South Athletic Conference included Maryville’s Greg Hernandez as the Player of the Year, LaGrange’s Marcus Vaughn as the Freshman of the Year, and the Scots’ Randy Lambert as Coach of the Year.

Huntingdon will close out its season this weekend when it participates in the GSAC Tournament, hosted by Agnes Scott, in Decatur, Ga. The Hawks (11-14, 2-4 GSAC) will take on top-seed Maryville (21-4, 5-1 GSAC) on Friday at 3 p.m. All of the games at Agnes Scott College on Friday and Saturday will be available on FREE live video and audio at www.pennatlantic.com, by searching for Agnes Scott College.
