Hawks win two in Birmingham; tennis team impressive in conference opener

Contributed BIRMINGHAM – The Huntingdon baseball team continued its strong play by winning a pair of games on Saturday and extending its win streak to six games, as it defeated Arcadia, 14-8, in the opener and Mount St. Joseph’s, 11-8, in the finale at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Samford University’s campus. With the sweep, the Hawks now stand at 8-3 on the season and will look to continue their streak on Sunday against Birmingham-Southern. Huntingdon will look to avenge an earlier-season loss to the Panthers at 2:30 p.m. In the contest against the Knights (0-1), senior Chris Knight and freshman Austin White each drove in three runs and freshman Steve Argo tossed 6.0 innings of effective relief, as the Hawks overcame three errors in the victory. After three innings, the two squads were tied at 6-6, but Huntingdon scored in the final five frames, including two runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Junior Greg Clayton led the team with three hits, while also scoring three runs. Senior Bryant Hall scored a team-high four runs and seniors Kyle Eller and Chad Green each had two hits. Eller also added three stolen bases. Argo took the mound for Huntingdon starter John Rice, who tossed just one inning in the contest. Argo, making his first collegiate appearance, threw 6.0 innings, scattering eight hits, while striking out four and walking none, to earn the victory. Senior Blake Gillies and sophomore Caleb Cofield each threw perfect innings of relief to seal the win. In the win against the Lions, Hawks’ starter Alex Sanford worked six innings and fellow senior Scott Holloway slammed the door to earn the victory. Senior Josh Bennefield finished with four hits, while Knight added two more hits. Huntingdon blew the game open with five runs in the seventh inning, after the Lions rallied to take the lead two innings earlier. Women’s tennis impressive in conference opener MACON, Ga. — The Huntingdon women’s tennis team dropped just one set in a 9-0 victory over Wesleyan in each team’s Great South Athletic Conference opener on Saturday. With the win, the Lady Hawks improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Pioneers fell to 0-2 on the year. In doubles play, senior Riley Prescott and freshman Katie Scott made short work of Kellie Cauley and Soshawn Blair at the No. 1 position, 8-0. Junior Kristi McDaniel and sophomore Kayla Heetland rolled at the No. 2 spot against Hannah Doan and Katie McIntosh, 8-0, while the sophomore tandem of Christian Vick and Madison Jackson cruised at the No. 3 position, 8-0. In singles play, Scott at the No. 1 position, Prescott at the No. 2 position, McDaniel at No. 3, Jackson at No. 4 and Heetland at No. 5, all won in perfect fashion, winning 6-0, 6-0. Freshman LaTara Lofton picked up her first collegiate victory with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Lorikim Morris at the No. 6 spot. The Lady Hawks will return to action on Wednesday, March 3, when they host LaGrange at 3:30 p.m. |
