Lowe, AUM baseball reach 900 wins

Contributed Tanner Williams’ two-out pinch-hit single, scored Charles Lester and sent Auburn University at Montgomery to a 5-4 comeback win over 11th ranked Tennessee Wesleyan College. The win for AUM was the program’s 900th win in the 23-year history of the program, and was also Q.V. Lowe’s 900th career win at AUM. The Senators entered the ninth down 4-3 and were down to their last strike when Jacob Salter started the rally with a two-strike single up the middle. Lester followed Salter and was hit, putting runners on first and second. Justin Williams, who had just missed a grand slam the inning before, shot a ball into left field scoring Salter. Lester moved to third on the play, which set up the game-winner from Tanner Williams. TWC scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Cody Gaskill to score Ryan Santos. The Senators evened the score in the bottom of the fourth inning when Justin Williams scored on a misplayed ground ball on the Bulldogs infield. Both teams scored in the fifth. TWC’s David Lindsay led the top half of the inning off with a double and came around to score on an AUM error on a sacrifice bunt. AUM scored its run in the bottom half of the inning as Salter tripled past a diving C.J. McElroy in right field and scored on Lester’s single to center. TWC took the lead in the seventh with two runs on an RBI single from Jonathon Smith and a squeeze play off the bat of Gaskill. AUM cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff double from Sam Judah who eventually scored on bases loaded walk to Lester. Jared Fonseca (2-0) picked up the win pitching the final inning and a third and did not allow a run giving the Senators a chance for the comeback. Jason Ferguson (0-1) picked up the loss for TWC, allowing the two runs on three hits in the bottom of the ninth. Salter scored two runs and had three hits, while Lester added two RBI and also scored a run. Judah had a RBI and two hits and both Tanner and Justin Williams had a hit an RBI. Santos finished with three hits and two runs scored for TWC and Lindsay also had two hits. With the 900th win, the Senators have averaged over 39 wins per season and Lowe, who started the program in 1987, has been at the helm for all 900 wins. AUM moves to 4-3 on the season and TNC is now 0-2. The Senators will make its first road trip of the season on Tuesday, when it travels to Mobile to face Spring Hill College. |
