SUPER PICKS: Colts favorite among local media

Staff Report
(Feb. 7, 2010)

Several local media experts made their choice in the annual River Region Sports Super Bowl contest. The majority like the Indianapolis Colts to win this year’s championship of the National Football League.

Most feel that quarterback Peyton Manning will be the difference against the Saints who make their first-ever appearance in the game. Miami will be literally black and blue after this one.

Jeff Shearer, Sports Director, WSFA 12

I think the Saints wil lbe a tad "wide-eyed." This is all new for them. It’s a huge victory for them to get here.

By contrast, the Colts have been there and done that before.

There’s nobody better than Peyton in the big game. If you need to drive for the game-winning kick, he’s the guy you want running the show.

Tied at 28-28, Manning leads the Colts into field-goal position in the final minutes.

I think New Orleans has as many offensive weapons as Indianapolis, and this Super Bowl has the two best QB’s in the game today in it.  With that being said, I still think there is something special about Peyton Manning and the way he can read defenses.  It may be a shoot out, but I am going with the Colts

Super Bowl XLIV will be an exciting game and is likely to be an offensive slugfest. Both the Colts and the Saints have proven all season that they are the top two teams in the NFL, but I think this game will come down to two things.

First, I think the first defense to keep their opponent off the scoreboard on five possessions will give its team a major upperhand in the game.

Second, how will Drew Brees react to playing on the biggest stage of his career? Peyton Manning has played for a national title in college and has played in the Super Bowl, so he will have the advantage of having dealt with the hoopla involved with the Super Bowl before. The Saints have averaged nearly 40 points per game this postseason, while the Colts are averaging close to two touchdowns less. Ultimately, I see a high scoring game with Brees leading the Saints and the City of New Orleans to the Championship.

Let’s see, the Indianapolis Colts have arguably the best quarterback of all time and a much better defense than the New Orleans Saints. Any questions?

It’s Peyton against his daddy’s old team in their first Super Bowl.  I like Drew Brees and how he’s risen to the top after being ditched in San Diego, but Manning is the best player in the game today on the best team.

Last year, I made the point that most underdogs don’t win this game. History proves it. When New York beat the Patriots two years ago, it was an anomaly. The Steelers placed the Super Bowl world back on its axis last year.

So, what gives this year? Why am I all of the sudden a big proponent of the Saints? Defensively, they are porous. They have no Super Bowl experience. Some might say they are lucky to be here.

The key word is "lucky." While I am not a believer in karma, the Saints seem to have it this year. They breezed through the season until a few hicups late. They got what I consider a favorable draw in the divisional round of the playoffs and then watched as Bret Farve threw away his last shot at a Super Bowl ring.

So, let’s go with the underdog and prove myself wrong.
