AUM News: Baseball team loses at Columbus State; Moore, Thomas garner tourney honors

COLUMBUS, Ga.—The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team went on the road against nationally-ranked Columbus State University and the Cougars added to the Senators early season woes with a 9-4 win.

AUM scored early with two runs in the first on a Tanner Williams single and a Cody Chizmar bases-loaded walk.

That lead did not last long as the first two CSU batters walked and Jason Rogers hit a three-run homerun to give CSU a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning.

AUM managed to even the score in the top of the second, but CSU would score two runs in the second, third and fourth innings to put the game away.

Rogers finished the game with two hits and four RBI, while Griffin Cameron had three hits and a RBI.  Eric Skinner added two hits and scored a run as the home-standing Cougars out hit AUM 11-9.

Todd Cherry, Sam Judah and Williams all finished with two hits for AUM with Williams adding two RBI and Judah adding one.

David Lane (4-0) went the distance for CSU, scattering nine hits and striking out nine while allowing the four runs.

Jeffrey Van Fossen (1-2) picked up the loss.  He gave up three hits and five runs in his one-plus inning of work.

CSU (17-2) wins its 16th consecutive game, while the Senators fall to 9-12.  AUM will jump back into conference action this Friday, when the play at Faulkner University at 6 p.m.

Moore,  Thomas earn all-tournament honors

Cassie Moore and Nathan Thomas were named to the Southern States Athletic Conference All-Tournament team, as both players led their respective teams into the semifinals of the tournament.

Thomas led the tournament in scoring, averaging 24.5 points per game.  He also averaged eight rebounds, had six blocked shots and five steals in the tournament.

Moore averaged a double-double in the tournament, averaging 15.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.  She also had nine blocked shots and two steals in the tournament.

Both players tournament play was an extension of the regular season, as they were both named All-SSAC and were the SSAC Defensive Players of the Year.
