Hawks split with St. Mary’s; golf team in fifth place at Calloway

Contributed The Huntingdon softball team split a pair of non-conference games against Saint Mary-of-the –Woods on Monday, falling in the opener 4-3, while winning the nightcap, 4-2, at the Huntingdon Softball Field. With the split, the Hawks now stand at 3-9 on the season, but are 2-2 against Division III opponents. In the opener, Huntingdon led for much of the game, but a three-run double by Sara Goelz gave the Pomeroys a 4-3 advantage, a lead they would hold on. The Hawks were paced by junior Barton Hunter, who finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Senior Kayla Bratcher took the loss for Huntingdon, tossing 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and striking out two. In the finale, the Hawks scored all four runs during the fourth inning of the game. Freshman Brittney Calma drove in a pair of runs with a double, while P.J. Pringle and Mary Lawren Hill each recorded run-scoring hits. Freshman Melissa McClure tossed a complete game to earn the victory, striking out two. Huntingdon will return to action on Saturday, March 6, when it travels to Holly Springs, Miss., to take on Rust. First pitch against the Bearcats is scheduled for 1 p.m. Hawks 13 shots off pace PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. —- The Huntingdon men’s golf team will enter the final round of the Callaway Collegiate Invitational in fifth place, after carding an opening-round score of 303 on the par 72, 7,027 yard Mountain View Course at Callaway Gardens on Monday. The Hawks, ranked second in the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches’ Poll, are 13 strokes behind tournament leader, University of West Georgia. Methodist, the nation’s top team, is second after posting a 297 in the opening round, while Rhodes is third following a 300. Darton Community College is fourth two strokes ahead of the Hawks. Leading Huntingdon on the day was sophomore Mack Duke, who is currently tied for third in the 85 man field, following an even par round of 72. In his round, Duke torched the front nine to the tune of three-under par 33, but posted a three-over par 39 on the back nine. Duke trails Eric Alvarez of UWG, who carded a two-under par 70 and leads the tournament by one stroke over Clifton Barton from Piedmont. Junior Chase Blaich followed up his individual tournament championship last week at the Wynlakes Wynternationals, but posting a 75 in the opening round and it tied for 16th. Fellow junior Jay Unis recorded a five-over par round of 77 and is tied for 35th, while senior Cody Causy posted a 79 and is tied for 45th. Junior J.P. Kircher rounded out the scoring for the Hawks, carding an 81 and is tied for 50th. Huntingdon also had three individuals play in the tournament. Senior Charlie Hearn finished with a four-over par round o f76 and is tied for 26th in the field, while fellow senior Jesse Collinsworth is tied for 64th after posting an 84. Chad Lovelady is one stroke behind, following an 85 in the opening round. With the threat of inclement weather in the forecast for Tuesday’s round, the 15-team field began its final 18 holes on Monday, but were unable to complete the round due to darkness.
