Contributed The senior arms of Scott Holloway and Alex Sanford helped the Huntingdon baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday, as the Hawks took game one, 3-1, before winning the nightcap, 9-3, at Neal Posey Field. In the opener, Holloway tossed a complete-game, six-hitter, allowing just one run and striking out five in his first start since March 1, 2008. With the win, Holloway improved to 3-0 on the season. Trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, Huntingdon (14-4) scored three runs in the frame to provide the final margin. Senior Chad Green delivered the game-winning hit, a two-run single up the middle to plate fellow seniors Kyle Eller and Shawn Bezwiechin. The Hawks tied the game earlier in the frame when Bezwiechin plated junior Drew Harrell, who led off the inning with a walk. The Hawks’ rally erased a strong outing from HSC (6-5) starter Dan Nicoll, who struck out five and allowed two hits in the first 5.0 innings. Matt Batten (0-1) took the loss, allowing three hits and all three runs. In game two, Sanford (4-1) dominated the Tigers allowing just two hits and two runs, while striking out 13. The strikeout total was one better than his previous career high of 12, set last season when he shutout conference foe Piedmont. The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead following a two-run homerun by Erick Herrmann in the top of the fourth inning. Huntingdon followed with nine unanswered during the next three innings, including five in the bottom of the sixth inning to blow the game open. Senior Josh Bennefield gave the Hawks the lead for good with a two-run double in the fifth, while freshman Austin White provided insurance with a double that plated two runs in the sixth inning. Senior Chris Knight and Eller also drove in runs in the five-run inning. Will Wiseman took the loss for the Tigers, falling to 0-1 on the season after allowing three runs in just 1/3 of an inning. Sophomore Caleb Coefield closed the game out for the Hawks, allowing an unearned run, while striking out two. Huntingdon will return to action on Friday, when it hosts Blackburn College at 6 p.m. |
