The Huntingdon baseball team swept a doubleheader from Blackburn College on Saturday, taking game one 13-0 and game two 19-0, at Neal Posey Field.

With the sweep, the Hawks improved to 16-4 on the season and have now won eight straight games. The Beavers fell to 1-8 on the year.

In the opener, senior Chad Green drove in five runs, while senior Shawn Bezwiechin and sophomore Chad Baxley each added two RBIs to lead the Hawks.

On the mound, junior Sam Griffin kept the Beavers in check, allowing just two hits in 5.0 innings of work, while striking out eight. Fellow junior Ryan Payne closed the door with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.

Nick Cronin had two of the three hits for Blackburn. Jacob Hainsfurther tossed all six innings, allowing 14 hits and 13 runs, 10 earned, while striking out six.

In the nightcap, senior Kyle Eller drove in three runs and five other players drove in two apiece, as the Hawks posted their second straight shutout in the series.

Senior Bryant Hall finished 3-for-3 at the plate, while fellow senior Josh Bennefield scored a team-high three runs.

Sophomore John Rice picked up his second victory of the year, tossing 4.1 innings, scattering three hits, while striking out five in his first outing since Feb. 27 against Arcadia. Freshmen Evan Agnew and Lucas Haynes allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of combined scoreless relief, while striking out five.

The two squads will conclude the series on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Hawks post first conference tennis victory

The Huntingdon men’s tennis team earned its first Great South Athletic Conference victory of the season, defeating Piedmont 8-1 on Saturday at the Huntingdon Tennis Courts. The Hawks also took on Millsaps, falling 5-0, to the Majors earlier in the day.

With the split, the Hawks improved to 3-6 on the season and 1-0 in GSAC play.

Huntingdon took all three matches in the doubles portion of the match against the Lions (0-4, 0-2 GSAC). Senior Kent Hagan and junior B.J. Foroughian rolled at the No. 1 position, 8-2, while sophomore Stephen Butts and freshman Zane Smith teamed to breeze past the duo of J.J. McCay and Zack Hicks, 8-1, at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 position, junior Ben Nobrega and freshman Larry Pritchett outlasted Mike Matthews and Andrew Peck, 8-6.

In singles play, Foroughian, Butts, Smith and Pritchett all earned victories, as did freshman Stacy Terry at the No. 6 position. Nobrega also picked up his first career singles win in an exhibition match.

Huntingdon will return to action on Sunday, when it hosts Maryville at 1 p.m.
