NEWS: Former Edgewood football player dies in car accident

Staff Report ELMORE - Edgewood Academy senior Jacob Benton died in a two-car accident on Alabama Hwy 167 Monday, near the Spring Hill community in Pike County. He was 18. Benton was a member of the Edgewood football team and was part of the team that won the state championship two years ago. He completed his football career this past season. Funeral arrangements are pending. The Edgewood football team have planned a special memorial service on Tuesday in the field house at 6 p.m. Wetumpka youth football league holds registration Registration for the Wetumpka Indians Youth Football and Cheer League is set for March 3 from 4- 6 p.m. and April 10 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Registration will take place at Trinity Episcopal Church located across from Winn-Dixie on US Hwy 231 in Wetumpka. The fee is $35 and ages are 5-13 for football players and 4-13 on cheerleaders. Go to the website, wyfcl.net for further info. Harrell out of Alabama-Missisippi game Lonnie Smith, a 6-foot-5 senior guard who helped the Ramsay Rams win the 2010 Class 4A state boys basketball championship, has been added to the Alabama roster for the 20th annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic scheduled March 19 at the Pelham Civic Complex. He replaces K.T. Harrell of Brewbaker Tech. Harrell, a Virginia early signee, asked to be removed from the squad due to a family commitment. The teams report to Pelham. The game is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. and precedes the girls game which is set for 5 p.m. at the Pelham Civic Complex. |
