PREP BASEBALL: Smith earns milestone victory; Trinity, Brew Tech sweep area series

Coach Rocky Smith earned his 100th career win in LAMP’s sweep of Montgomery Academy on Saturday.

The Golden Tigers (11-6, 3-0) won 3-2 in the first game in come-from-behind fashion. They took the second game, 8-3.

In Game 1, LAMP fought back from a 2-0 deficit. Bryan Young’s solo home run tied the game and Jay Taylor drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. Chris Dunn was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Miller Norman. Dunn pitched the final three innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.

Will Davis picked up the loss for MA going seven innings. He struck out eight.

The Tigers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, using five different pitchers. Starter Harry Norman was the winning pitcher with J.R. Eason, Justin Watson, C.J. Sauce and Aaron Driskill all contributing to the win on the mound.

Young had two hits and two RBIs in the second game.

In his sixth season, Smith has compiled a 101-76 record, all at LAMP.

The Tigers will travel to Gulf Shores next week for the Nike Gulf Coast Classic. Montgomery Academy (5-10, 0-3) faces Montevallo next Friday in Class 3A, Area 5 play.

Rams sweep Ashford

Brewbaker Tech swept Ashford, 13-1 and 6-1, in the Rams’ first area series of the season.

Ben Taylor (2-1) picked up the win for the Rams.  He had nine strikeouts and surrendered three hits in his six-inning complete game victory. 

Brew Tech was led offensively by Hunter Brooks, Paul Harris, and Alex Henderson, each collected two hits and 2 RBI’s.  Clint Knight also had a productive day at the plate for the Rams going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

In the second game,  Hunter Brooks (5-0) was the winning pitcher collecting his fifth straight win.  He also threw a complete game, striking out five and scattering three hits.

Offensively, Brooks helped his own cause by doubling in two runs in the first inning. 

Brew Tech (11-2, 2-0) will travel to Gulf Shores with its first game on Monday morning against Pinson Valley.

Trinity has little trouble with Montevallo

Blake Barrow led Trinity both on the mound and at the plate in the Wildcats’ sweep of Montevallo in Class 3A, Area 5 play on Saturday.

Barrow pitched a no hitter in the first game striking out five in a 13-0 win. He added two hits and two runs driven in. In Game 2, a 14-2 victory, Barrow added two more hits and two RBIs.

Josh Watkins got the win in the second game, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. He struck out four. He added three hits and two RBIs at the plate.

William Stabler had four hits and scored two times and three runs driven in during the doubleheader. Jack Poundstone had three hits and four RBIs in the two games.

Matt Jeter had two RBIs in the first game while Weston Epperson added two hits and an RBI in the second game.

Trinity (8-2, 2-0) plays in the Baldwin County tournament this week.
