Contributed For the second day in a row, starting pitching was the story for the Montgomery Biscuits. In a “Back to school Special” on Tuesday, it was David Newmann making the deepest outing of the season for the Biscuits, tossing 7 and 2/3 scoreless innings en route to a 4-0 Biscuits win over Mississippi. The shutout is the fourth of the season already for Montgomery. The Biscuits broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Greg Sexton doubled home Chris Nowak and Matt Fields. They added one in the seventh on an RBI triple from John Matulia and one in the eighth when Cody Cipriano singled home Fields, who had walked with one out. The Biscuits had several chances to blow the game wide open, but left the bases loaded twice and stranded 15 on the afternoon. Emeel Salem recorded his first three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with a walk. Nowak, Cipriano, and Matulia all had two hits for the Biscuits. Alex Romero and Luis Bolivar led the Braves with two knocks apiece. Newmann (1-0) struck out a season-best seven while walking just one, allowing four hits. Mississippi starter Scott Diamond (0-2) went 4 and 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits in the loss. Matt Gorgen picked up his fourth save, pitching the final inning-plus in relief. The Biscuits (10-9) clinched the series victory with their second win a row, while the Braves (10-9) fall into a second-place tie with the Biscuits. Jeremy Hall throws in the series capper for the Biscuits on Wednesday night against Mississippi’s Eric Cordier with the first pitch at 7:05. |
