BayBears slip past Biscuits after long rain delay

(June 30, 2010)

MOBILE – After a franchise-record 3-hour and 39-minute rain delay, the Biscuits allowed just four hits to the BayBears, but fell, 2-1, Tuesday at Hank Aaron Stadium. The game was scheduled to begin at 12:05 p.m.. It was completed at 6:08 p.m.

The BayBears broke a scoreless tie in a lighting-quick ballgame in the fifth against Jeremy Hall. Evan Frey led off the frame with a double, then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Collin Cowgill.

The Biscuits tied it one inning later. Henry Wrigley started things off with a double down the left field line, and would score on a Chris De La Cruz ground out.

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the eighth, Bryan Byrne homered off Matt Gorgen (3-2) to straightaway left field for what would prove to be the game-winning run.

Hall took a no-decision, allowing a run on just two hits over six innings while striking out five and walking one. Mobile starter Wade Miley also settled for a no-decision, giving up a run on four hits in seven innings of work. The win went to Jeff Dietz, who pitched a hitless eighth inning. Reid Mahon (3) allowed a two-out single to Nevin Ashley in the ninth, but got Chris De La Cruz to line out at the warning track in right to nail down the save.

Wrigley paced the Biscuits with a 2-4 day.

Jake McGee will start for Montgomery on Wednesday against Mobile’s Bryan Henry. He gets the nod after scheduled starter Barry Enright was promoted to the Diamondbacks to start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The Biscuits and BayBears will get started with the third of six in the series at 7:05 p.m.
