Biscuits blow lead late

KODAK, Tenn. – After Montgomery (53-41) built a 3-0 lead, the Tennessee Smokies (56-39) scored four runs over the final three innings and got a two-out, walk-off single from Marwin Gonzalez to beat Montgomery 4-3 on Tuesday at Smokies Park.

Despite settling for a series-split with the Smokies, the road trip was still a successful one at 5-2.

Brandon Guyer singled with one out in the ninth against Dane De La Rosa (6-2). After Tony Thomas popped out to second, Gonzalez hit a soft liner to right center that went off the glove of a diving Rashad Eldridge to bring Guyer home and complete the comeback.

The Biscuits had built the lead with a solo homer from Henry Wrigley in the second, and in the fifth, an RBI single from Drew Anderson and a bases-loaded walk from Shawn O’Malley. After those two fifth inning runs, the Biscuits still had the bases loaded with nobody out. Emeel Salem struck out, and Leslie Anderson grounded into one of his three double plays on the night to end the inning.

The Smokies began to climb back into the game in the seventh against Paul Phillips, getting back-to-back one-out singles from Matt Spencer and Guyer, and a two-run trip from Thomas. They’d tie things up at 3-3 on a Russ Canzler sacrifice fly in the eighth, scoring Brett Jackson who had started with a double.

Biscuits starter David Newmann left the game after three scoreless. Heath Rollins followed with three scoreless innings of relief. For the Smokies, starter Marcos Mateo also last just three innings. The win went to Aaron Shafer (1-1), who pitched the final two innings scoreless.

Salem paced the Biscuits with a 2-for-4 night.

The Biscuits return to Riverwalk on Thursday, when they’ll begin a five-game set against the Carolina Mudcats. Jake McGee is the scheduled starter for Montgomery against Carolina’s Travis Webb. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
