Prep teams get in one more camp; Carver shines in Hoover tourney

(Staff Photo) Staff Report Local high school teams got one more chance to participate in camps before the month ends this week at Huntingdon College. More than a dozen teams from both the AISA and AHSAA are participating in the annual Hawks 7-on-7 Camp while hundreds of linemen from several schools are participating in a camp. “It’s hot but we’ve got about 300 kids out here (on Monday) and we will have more again on Tuesday,” Huntingdon head football coach Mike Turk said. “The lineman camp continues to grow.”

(Staff Photo) Local teams such as Edgewood Academy, Macon-East Montgomery, Autaugaville, Elmore County and others participated in the 7-on-7 camp. “You probably have to be nuts to be out in this heat but it’s another chance to get some work in before we go to regular practices,” Edgewood coach Bobby Carr said. “There is always good teams that participate in this camp so we like coming here. The staff at Huntingdon is great with the kids.” Pre-season workouts for AHSAA teams are scheduled to begin next Tuesday while AISA schools can actually hit the field beginning Thursday. Carver wins elite 7-on-7 G.W. Carver recently won the National Select 7-on-7 Challenge held in Hoover. The Wolverines won over more than 100 teams from across the nation. “Very excited for our kids and proud of the work they did,” Carver coach Al Pogue said. “This should really give us some confidence going into the season.” Carver opens the season on Aug. 27 against Opelika. |
