Biscuits avoid sweep

Paul Phillips threw five scoreless innings, allowing only a bunt single, and four Biscuits (63-61) pitchers combined to three-hit the Chattanooga Lookouts (59-65) in a 9-2 win Sunday at Riverwalk.

Elian Herrera’s fourth-inning bunt single against Phillips (5-2) was the only hit against the Biscuits before the ninth inning. Matt Gorgen tossed a perfect sixth, and Dane De La Rosa twirled a pair of hitless frames before catcher Craig Albernaz came on to pitch the ninth. Albernaz gave up a long home run to Jerry Sands and a double to Corey Smith.

Nevin Ashley paced the Biscuits offense, reaching all five times on a 4-4 day, homering and driving in five. Rashad Eldridge, Matt Spring, and Shawn O’Malley all pitched in two hits as well.

The starting scored in the second, when Chattanooga starter Jesus Castillo hit O’Malley with the bases loaded. They added two in the third on Ashley’s homer, then three in the fourth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh.

Phillips struck out four and walked none in only the second start of his six-year pro career. Castillo (4-8) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on 11 hits over six innings.

The Biscuits, with 15 games remaining, sit 5.0 games behind the Mobile BayBears in the South Division wild card hunt.

Jeremy Hall will take the mound for the Biscuits as they open a three-game series in Huntsville on Monday at 7:05. Michael Bowman counters for the Stars.
