Biscuits handle West Tenn

JACKSON, Tenn – Alex Cobb fanned 10 West Tenn (60-54) batters and a five-run second inning proved to be enough for the Biscuits (60-53) in a 7-3 defeat of the Diamond Jaxx Tuesday at Pringles Park.

Cobb (5-4) struck out the first five batters of the game, and didn’t give up a hit until Joe Dunigan went deep with one out in the third. He’d go six innings total, walking just one and allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. The staff struck out 13 total, with the bullpen keeping the opposition off the board for the first time in nine games.

The big second inning for the Biscuits started with a swinging bunt infield single for Henry Wrigley. Rashad Eldridge singled, and John Matulia tripled to the wall in right center make it 2-0. Emeel Salem would add a run with a double, and Drew Anderson doubled home a pair to complete the scoring in the inning against Jaxx starter Steven Hensley (7-10).

After the Biscuits went up 5-0, the Jaxx scored two in the third and one in the fifth to cut it to 5-3. The Biscuits plated insurance in the seventh, getting an RBI single from Nevin Ashley and an RBI on a fielder’s choice out from John Matulia.

Matulia drove home three in the game, and is now 10-17 in the series with seven RBI. Salem, Wrigley, and Chris De La Cruz all recorded two hits on the night.

Sergio Espinosa tossed two scoreless relief frames, and has now gone 11.2 straight innings without giving up a run.

Hensley fought through five innings, and allowed just two more hits after the second in the loss.

David Newmann will start for the Biscuits as they search for a series victory against Jarrett Grube on Wednesday at 12:05.
