LOCAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL: ASU, Faulkner prepare for scrimmages

The Alabama State University Hornets will hold its final scrimmage game of the preseason Saturday at 9 a.m. at Hornets Stadium.

The scrimmage will culminate an 18-day preseason practice schedule that included several two-a-day practices and two scrimmages.

The scrimmage will mirror last week’s scrimmage with all three quarterbacks, Rashard Burkette, Demetric Price and Devin Dominguez, taking the same amount of snaps.

In last week’s scrimmage, the offense racked up over 330 yards and scored 24 points in 10 possessions.  The defense really dominated the practice early, only allowing one touchdown over the first six possessions of the scrimmage.  That includes stopping the first drive with an interception.

ASU will do film study on Sunday and will take Monday off before preparing for the season-opener against Mississippi Valley State University on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.

Faulkner ready for Saturday scrimmage

Faulkner head football coach Gregg Baker was happy with the way his players completed their first full week of practice. On Friday, the Eagles incorporated drills and scrimmage sets that allowed more repetitions for the younger players and coaches were impressed by some of the incoming talent heading into Saturday’s intersquad scrimmage.

“I saw a lot of good things today,” Baker said. “I thought the running game looked really good  and I saw some great things out of some of the newer backs and that’s encouraging.”

Running backs Ricky Barr and AJ Stokes were standouts in the backfield according to Baker. The two put together some explosive runs that helped diversify the offensive assault and keep the defense on its toes.

The Eagles will hold their first intersquad scrimmage of the preseason Saturday on campus. The contest will run for approximately 100 plays beginning with ones versus ones and continuing through the progression. The coaches also plan on incorporating some special teams work into the session.

“We’ve been handling assignments and things well this week and we hope that continues into tomorrow,” Baker added. “We’re looking for depth more than anything right now and making sure we have the right players in the right roles.”
