PRESS PICKS: Panel makes choices for college titles, awards

Staff Report
(Aug. 30, 2010)

River Region Sports begins its preview of the college football season with a look at the choices of the local press.

Last year, the press were near-unanimous in its choice of Florida as the team to beat both nationally and in the SEC. This year, it’s Alabama that is the odds-on favorite to be on top.

The panel was asked to choose the winners of the BCS conferences as well as give away the top awards for the upcoming season.

Later this week, the panel will make their first picks in college football. It opened the high school football season last week.

Last year’s final standings

1. Jeff Shearer (15-10) 156-76 .672

2. Michael Butler (16-9) 152-80 .655

    Jim Tocco (14-11) 152-80 .655

    Doug Amos (12-13) 152-80 .655

5. Graham Dunn (18-7) 151-81 .650

6. Dee Jackson (13-12) 137-80 .631

7. Barry McKnight (9-16) 131-89 .595
