PREP CAPSULES: Coaching debuts dominate Week 1

Week 1 of the high school football season has arrived (with due respect to the handful of games played in the AISA last week.) In comes new regions, new classifications for some, and some interesting openers, particularly a few that feature teams playing for the first time.

The week ushers in new coaches at six different schools in the River Region.

Each week, River Region Sports will break down the top matchups of the week and pick a winner in all games involving teams from the area.

2010 River Region Football Guide now available

River Region Sports, the latest news media outlet in Montgomery and the tri-county area, is excited to announce the release of the 2010 River Region Football Guide.

The guide covers high school football in the tri-county area with each school represented. It includes team stories, schedules and a look at the new regions in both the AHSAA and AISA.

PRATTVILLE - Edgewood Academy ‘s 43-7 thumping of East Memorial Christian Academy (EMCA) Thursday night is the perfect tune up for the Wildcats before they begin region play next week.

The outcome was never in doubt as Edgewood rolled up 36 points before the first quarter was in the books at Prattville’s Stanley Jensen Stadium.

Local high school teams got one more chance to participate in camps before the month ends this week at Huntingdon College.

More than a dozen teams from both the AISA and AHSAA are participating in the annual Hawks 7-on-7 Camp while hundreds of linemen from several schools are participating in a camp.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) announced on Tuesday a ban on composite-barreled bats. The ban follows suit after the NCAA announced a similar ban last year.

The ruling could cost high schools hundreds of dollars in replacements since the bats will not be allowed during the 2011 season.

PRATTVILLE - When John Glasscock went to East Memorial Christian Academy (EMCA) several years ago, he thought it would be the final stop in his career path.

“Of course, life takes us to places we don’t think about. Another opportunity came my way at a very good time and I decided to move on,” he said.

Glasscock is now the head coach at Meadowview Christian Academy in Selma.

The Jamey DuBose football camp will be held June 21-23 for players in grades 1-8.

The camp is non-contact and designed to give each athlete a solid foundation in fundamentals needed to excel at his position…. Prattville Christian Academy announced an expansion of their athletic coaching staff recently, affecting both boys and girls sports… The Auburn Montgomery (AUM) Athletic Department recently launched its new Website.

The top baseball players are set for the Alabama Independent School Association all-star baseball game but with an added twist this year.

They will play somebody else.

The top 18 seniors will face the best from the Georgia Independent School Association in a game on June 7 at Troy University’s Pace-Riddle Field.

The Hooper Academy Colts reached new heights in the AISA Class AAA state softball tournament this weekend.

But that reach didn’t include a state championship.

The Colts finished second to Glenwood School, losing to the Gators twice on Saturday, including a 5-4 defeat in the championship game at Lagoon Park.

The Hooper Lady Colts are in unfamiliar territory…. Good territory but unknown.

The Colts got a 3-1 victory over Kingwood Christian in the second game of the day in the AISA Class AAA state softball tourney. It allowed them to move into the winner’s bracket game on Saturday, something the program has never enjoyed.
