Former Alabama Christian Academy standout Chandler Taylor was taken in the 10th round by the Houston Astros (pick No. 302) on Tuesday in the MLB First-year Player Draft.

A trip to the batting cage provided a short-term fix to Alabama Christian’s hitting woes, but it wasn’t enough to bring the Eagles a state championship.

Alabama Christian managed just three runs on the first day of the Alabama High School Athletic Association state softball tournament, losing to Hale County 1-0 before rebounding to beat Cherokee County 2-0.

Alabama Christian advanced to the state softball tournament for the 21st time in the last 22 years, defeating Satsuma, 5-3, to earn one of the two Class 4A qualifiers from the South Regional at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

With two of the state’s top pitchers and several returning players, Alabama Christian’s softball team planned on making a return to the state tournament and improving on last year’s third-place finish. 

But all those plans suffered a devastating setback just prior to the season when freshman catcher Allyssa Clark suffered a season-ending knee injury, leaving the Eagles without a catcher.

ACA coach Chris Goodman turned to Natalie Faulkner, a career infielder who had never stepped behind the plate a day in her life.

It was supposed to be a battle for area supremacy.

After five walks and five errors led to five unearned runs, what had been a tight battle between Alabama Christian Academy and LAMP turned into another rout for the Eagles on Tuesdayas they moved a step closer to taking the top seed in the 4A Area 4 race.

Camden Lovrich didn’t need any help.

On a day where Lovrich was nearly perfect, LAMP pitchers and fielders weren’t, helping Trinity to a 10-1 victory over the Golden Tigers at Jason Armstrong Field on Friday afternoon.

The area victory lifted Trinity to 4-0 in area play, virtually assuring the Wildcats of a berth in the state playoffs. LAMP dropped to 0-4, eliminating the Tigers from repeating their surprising run to the semifinals of the playoffs a year ago.

Lacy Spear pitched a no hitter but walked three while striking out six in the 19-0 win shortened to four innings by the mercy rule.
