In a title match involving two teams that hit the baseball, steal bases and score runs, it was pitching that took center stage in the Alabama Independent School Association Class AA state baseball tournament at Paterson Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The best-of-three series was settled in two games because of the efforts of Drew Baker and Tucker Neven, a pair of Macon East Academy hurlers that helped the Knights sweep Autauga 8-3 and 4-3 for their second consecutive state championship.

CECIL – He’s played catcher for three years at Macon East Academy, but this year there were different plans for senior Drew Baker.

Baker signed with Chipola College in the fall and is projected as a pitcher at the collegiate (or professional) level, so Macon East coach Bob Pickett wanted Baker to see more duty on the mound this season.

The Macon East Lady Knights had blown the lead in the seventh, battled back to tie the game in the eighth, only to lose in the ninth inning to Pickens Academy in the AISA Class AA softball finals.

Now, the Knights would have to find a way to regain the momentum in a second championship matchup with the Pirates if they wanted to win a state championship.

Shelby Lowe was everything Macon East Academy expected, but once again the Knights had an answer for the Pickens Academy ace.

Macon East (55-11) scored the game’s first two runs with the help of errors, added two more in the fifth, then withstood a Pirate rally over the last three at-bats to win 4-3 and advance to the winner’s bracket finals in the AISA Class AA state softball tournament at Lagoon Park on Friday evening.

Tyler Bell was virtually down to his last pitch. And he knew it.

The Prattville Christian Academy senior struck out Eric Doh with his final pitch – the 121st pitch of the day for Bell – and secured the save in a 5-4 victory over Montgomery Academy on Friday night that served as the tiebreaker for both teams should they finish tied atop the area standings… First-year Autauga Academy baseball coach Scott Tubbs reached a milestone on Friday when his Generals defeated Coosa Valley Academy 10-1 in the first game of a doubleheader, giving the coach his 500th career victory.

CECIL - In what could be a preview of the AISA Class AA championship series, Autauga and Macon East met in the semifinals of the Macon East Academy Tournament on Saturday.

With bigger stakes two months away, both coaches opted to pitch down in their rotations and not give away any trade secrets. Macon East, for example, boasts a lineup that has stolen nearly 100 bases this season, but only one player swiped a base.
