ELMORE – Teammates of Edgewood Academy senior Jacob Benton gathered together on Tuesday at the Edgewood field house to remember the young man who found a way to keep his teammates laughing.
Benton died in a two-car accident on Alabama Hwy 167 Monday, near the Spring Hill community in Pike County. He was 18.

Registration for the Wetumpka Indians Youth Football and Cheer League is set for March 3 from 4- 6 p.m. and April 10 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Lonnie Smith, a 6-foot-5 senior guard who helped the Ramsay Rams win the 2010 Class 4A state boys basketball championship, has been added to the Alabama roster for the 20th annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic scheduled March 19 at the Pelham Civic Complex. He replaces K.T. Harrell of Brewbaker Tech.

After falling behind in the seventh inning, Chris Thomas hit a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the inning to cap a four-run rally as LAMP defeated Robert E. Lee, 7-6, at Paterson Field… Alabama Christian Academy soccer won its eighth game of the season with a 8-0 shutout of Holtville High School Monday night…Mallory Garmon and Krystin had two hits and two RBIs each in Edgewood Academy’s 9-3 victory over Fort Dale Academy on Monday.

Alabama Christian Academy Soccer notched its seventh victory of the season with a win over Elmore County, 8-0, on Thursday… Zach Pinter scored four goals and Sam Vargas had four assists to lead LAMP to a 7-0 win over Montgomery Catholic on Thursday.
Brewbaker Tech’s K.T. Harrell was named as a member of the Alabama All-Star team that will face Mississippi in the 20th annual Alabama-Mississippi Class on March 20 in Pelham.

ELMORE - Edgewood began the 2010 baseball season exactly the way it wanted with victories in its first two outings. But things changed last week when Coach Bobby Carr’s Wildcats dropped 4 of 5 games.

Merritt Waddell sank two 3-pointers – both from the same spot on the court – to lift the Warriors to a 56-53 win over Autauga Academy in the AISA Class AA semifinals at Huntingdon College…. Tremayne Hardin scored six of his 12 points late in the fourth quarter to lift Evangel Christian over Edgewood Academy, 59-53… Pickens Academy earned a 46-39 win over EMCA.

AISA Elite Eight basketball tournament scheduled for Friday has been postponed and split up over the course of three days, according to executive director Don Oswald.
Friday’s scheduled had featured quarterfinal action in Class AA and AAA. Games in AA have been moved to Saturday evening and Monday while all AAA games will be played on Tuesday.

Three seconds.
That’s what separated Edgewood from its second consecutive AISA Class AA state championship.
The Monroe Academy Volunteers defeated the Wildcats 30-29 with a 39-yard field goal by freshman place kicker Craig Bryant with three seconds remaining in the game.
