The first week of the high school football season provided a few surprises, a few upsets and a few games that went down to the wire. It sets up the first week of regional play for all teams in the AHSAA. Teams in the AISA already have (in some cases) two games under their belt.
This week, rivalries are renewed when Stanhope Elmore plays host to Prattville and Montgomery Academy faces Montgomery Catholic as the two teams are back in the same class and region for the first time since 2007.
Marcell Dareus, last year’s Defensive MVP in the BCS Championship, will sit out two games after the NCAA ruled that he had received improper benefits during a visit to Miami this summer.

Alabama defensive lineman Marcell Dareus must miss two games and repay benefits as a condition of becoming eligible to play again, according to a decision Thursday by the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff. Dareus must repay the $1787.17 of benefits to a charity of his choice.

The Montgomery Quarterback Club has announced its first players of the week for the 2010 season… On Nov.13, the University of Alabama football team will take the field for their game against Mississippi State at Bryant-Denny Stadium wearing the 2010 version of the Nike Pro Combat uniform. (MORE)

The Sidney Lanier Poets open the home schedule on Thursday, facing one of two teams they defeated in 2009, Benjamin Russell. Both teams are coming off tough losses.
Angelo Wheeler will attempt to get his first win as the new Lanier coach.

TUSCALOOSA – The Alabama football team practiced for two hours in full pads Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields in preparation for Saturday’s season opener against San Jose State.
AUBURN - The Auburn football team returned to the practice fields Tuesday evening, working out in full pads for more than two hours on the Athletics Complex practice fields.

TUSCALOOSA - Alabama’s Mark Ingram underwent arthroscopic surgery early Tuesday on his left knee, according to a statement by Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.
Ingram will not play against San Jose State and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. Alabama hosts Penn State on Sept. 11 and visits Duke on Sept. 18.

TUSCALOOSA – The Alabama football team continued its preparations for Saturday’s season opener with a two-hour practice in full pads on the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields Monday afternoon.
San Jose State comes to Tuscaloosa under first-year head coach Mike MacIntyre after Dick Tomey retired following the 2009 season. The Spartans identity on both the offensive and defensive sides of the football are a mystery for the Crimson Tide coaches.

River Region Sports begins its preview of the college football season with a look at the choices of the local press.
Last year, the press were near-unanimous in its choice of Florida as the team to beat both nationally and in the SEC. This year, it’s Alabama that is the odds-on favorite to be on top.
