Every two years, Alabama High School Athletic Association programs have to contend with new rivalries as they move up or down in the classification system.
The biggest change for the 2018-2020 classification period involves St. James, who drops from their customary position as a Class 4A program to become the largest school in Class 3A.

It was a banner first round for the River Region.
In all, nine teams advanced. While that is not a record, it was enough to give kudos for a job well done.

Quinton Jeter’s 25-yard field goal in overtime provided the game-winning points as Tallassee edged Thomasville in a Class 4A first-round game… In a matchup of two teams chasing historic seasons, Alabama Christian earned a 33-28 win over Northside in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs on Friday… G.W. Carver got a 70-yard touchdown run from Justin Lewis and a 25-yard touchdown run by Terrance Webster to pull off a stunning 13-7 win at McAdory on Friday night.

The River Region will have plenty of representation in this year’s AHSAA playoffs.
Better yet, it might have plenty of success, too.

TUSCALOOSA - When both players at the same position on a depth chart suffer potential season-ending injuries, it can be devastating.
When one is the leader of the defense, it can hurt even more.
The loss of Shaun Dion Hamilton (knee) and Mack Wilson (foot) not only damages Alabama’s national championship dreams, it robs the defense of a charismatic leader and his inspirational backup.

For a select few, the AISA playoffs open at the same time.

Several teams still have work to do to either improve their seeding in the playoff or to actually make the post season.
With two weeks remaining in the regular season, there is still holes to fill in the playoff brackets.

Park Crossing won its third consecutive region title with a 34-19 victory over Sidney Lanier in what was one of the more bizarre games of the year at Cramton Bowl…Ethan Sellers booted a 30-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to give Opelika a 20-19 win over Wetumpka on Friday.
