ALEXANDER CITY - Tallassee split a doubleheader with Centra-Coosa and Briarwood in the Lake Martin Classic on Tuesday. Trey Cochran-Gill, Michael Tinney and Caleb Parker each had RBIs in a 10-5 loss to Briarwood… Catholic defeated Sidney Lanier behind Tripp Watley… Chris Dunn got the win in LAMP’s win over Southmoore, Okla.

ELMORE – Teammates of Edgewood Academy senior Jacob Benton gathered together on Tuesday at the Edgewood field house to remember the young man who found a way to keep his teammates laughing.
Benton died in a two-car accident on Alabama Hwy 167 Monday, near the Spring Hill community in Pike County. He was 18.

ELMORE - Edgewood Academy senior Jacob Benton died in a two-car accident on Alabama Hwy 167 Monday, near the Spring Hill community in Pike County. He was 18.
Registration for the Wetumpka Indians Youth Football and Cheer League is set for March 3 from 4- 6 p.m. and April 10 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Lonnie Smith, a 6-foot-5 senior guard who helped the Ramsay Rams win the 2010 Class 4A state boys basketball championship, has been added to the Alabama roster for the 20th annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic scheduled March 19 at the Pelham Civic Complex. He replaces K.T. Harrell of Brewbaker Tech.

ORANGE BEACH - LAMP split two games in the first day of the Nike Gulf Shores Classic… Brewbaker Tech could not muster up much run support in a 3-2 loss to Class 6A Pinson Valley… The Trinity Wildcats (8-4) dropped two games in the opening day of the Baldwin County Home Run Club Spring Classic.

Coach Rocky Smith earned his 100th career win in LAMP’s sweep of Montgomery Academy on Saturday.
The Golden Tigers (11-6, 3-0) won 3-2 in the first game in come-from-behind fashion. They took the second game, 8-3… Brewbaker Tech swept Ashford, 13-1 and 6-1, in the Rams’ first area series of the season… Blake Barrow led Trinity both on the mound and at the plate in the Wildcats’ sweep of Montevallo in Class 3A, Area 5 play on Saturday.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Auburn built a five-run lead at No. 2 Arizona State on Friday night but the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead as Auburn fell, 9-8, at Packard Stadium in Tempe. Arizona State answered Auburn’s five-run top of the fifth with six runs in the bottom half of the frame, snapping Auburn’s six-game winning streak in the process…. Alabama scored multiple runs in five of its eight innings en route to a 15-8 win over Stony Brook… Troy and Florida Atlantic combined to score 15 runs in the first three innings, but it was FAU getting the victory… Jalen Spraggins and Bryan Young each homered in LAMP’s 9-6 victory over Montgomery Academy (plus other high school scores).

OPP – Starting pitcher Gavin Free went the distance allowing just two hits in Opp’s 5-0 win over St. James in Class 4A, Area 2 play on Thursday… Josie Russell struck out 11 in the Lady Golden Tigers’ 7-5 victory over Trinity in Class 3A, Area 5 action on Thursday… G.W. Carver’s Shatavia Ferris and Roquez Johnson along with Jeff Davis guard Jatoria Carter will represent the River Region next summer in the annual North-South basketball games in the 14th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week competition in Huntsville.

Shortly after a loss in the recent FCA Jason Armstrong Baseball Classic, St. James head baseball coach Keith Lucky chose to look ahead to games that would count more than an 11-4 loss to Trinity Presbyterian.
“Everybody is building towards the area games,” Lucky said. “We take what we can out of games like this and move on.”
The time has now come for the Trojans and many of the baseball teams in the River Region, which open area play this weekend. St. James is one of several teams that begin “the ones that count” on Thursday.

Trinity Presbyterian warmed up for the opening of area play with an easy 16-2 win over Brewbaker Tech on Tuesday at Thompson Park… The Alabama Christian Academy and St. James soccer match was delayed by officials due to lightning with 14:57 minutes left in the game on Tuesday night… Greenville and Opelika will kick off the 2010 Champions Challenge Prep Football Classic at Cramton Bowl next August. Trinity is also scheduled to play Jackson High School on Saturday.

After falling behind in the seventh inning, Chris Thomas hit a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the inning to cap a four-run rally as LAMP defeated Robert E. Lee, 7-6, at Paterson Field… Alabama Christian Academy soccer won its eighth game of the season with a 8-0 shutout of Holtville High School Monday night…Mallory Garmon and Krystin had two hits and two RBIs each in Edgewood Academy’s 9-3 victory over Fort Dale Academy on Monday.
