Local prep baseball teams set for postseason

Staff Report
(April 17, 2017)

The post season has arrived for high school baseball. But there are still a few holes to fill when it comes to opponents for teams in the River Region.

Over the weekend, several teams wrapped up playoff bids, including LAMP, which returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2012 and the first time in Class 4A.

The postseson rides on one game for LAMP and Alabama Christian.

After seven playoff games, a rollercoaster season of ups and downs and with championship dreams in the balance, the two teams are tied for the runner-up spot in 4A Area 4. LAMP’s 3-2 victory on Thursday afternoon at Paterson Field set the stage for today’s area finale at the AUM Dixie complex.

It’s not always the same person and not always the same situation, which makes Alabama Christian’s 4-0 start in area play not only surprising but satisfying to head coach Don Gilliam.

“It’s somebody different every day coming through, which is a good sign,” Gilliam said. “We keep preaching the little bitty things – it’s the bunt to get the runner over, when you get a guy on third it’s hitting the ball the other way. Because baseball turns on a dime.”

On Friday afternoon, the game between St. James and ACA turned on a 3-ball-1-strike pitch that Dillon Hutchinson sent sailing over the leftfield fence, wiping out a 2-0 St. James lead. Hutchinson also delivered the game winner, a sacrifice fly in the sixth to break the 2-2 tie and propel the Eagles to a 5-2 victory.

There is another battle brewing in the state legislature. But it has nothing to do with gambling or your taxes.

Some state legislators tried to hold Alabama High School Association’s feet to the fire on Wednesday over an issue that is increasingly drawing the ire of a lot of coaches and fans in this state, and that is the assumed unfairness some private schools have over public schools when it comes to athletics.

Montgomery Academy’s Bethea to be inducted in AHSAA Hall of Fame

The signs on the fence at the Montgomery Academy tennis courts explain it all.

Over the last 19 years, every year but one is painted on a yellow sign hanging on the fence, symbolizing a state championship in either boys’ or girls’ tennis. Many of the years include championships in both sports, a sign of the dominance the school has had since David Bethea added tennis coaching duties to his busy schedule in 1983.
