Staff Report
(Sept. 3, 2010)
The first week of the high school football season provided a few surprises, a few upsets and a few games that went down to the wire. It sets up the first week of regional play for all teams in the AHSAA. Teams in the AISA already have (in some cases) two games under their belt.
This week, rivalries are renewed when Stanhope Elmore plays host to Prattville and Montgomery Academy faces Montgomery Catholic as the two teams are back in the same class and region for the first time since 2007.

After building confidence in last week’s preseason jamboree, the Robert E. Lee Generals took a step backwards in Friday’s season opener.
The Generals struggled offensively in a 10-0 loss to Class 5A Pleasant Grove at Cramton Bowl.

Press Picks returns for another season. The group of prognosticators includes last year’s champion, Jeff Shearer, sports director of WSFA Ch. 12.
Shearer began the 2009 season in last place but finished well ahead of the pack. The panel also welcomes newcomer Stu McCann from WAKA Ch. 8.
Running back Jarmarcus Barker (1) and the Jeff Davis Vols opened the season in new uniforms Thursday. But the style change wasn’t enough to aid in a win over Dothan. (Photo by Chris Dunn. For more photos of this and other games, click here)

Jeff Davis High School may have taken the field at Cramton Bowl with a different look on Thursday.
But the Volunteers mimicked the same team that lost 19 of 20 games in the past two seasons, only in a different uniform.
Dothan was convincing in its 27-6 victory over JD, which wore a brand new style of uniforms (much like the look of the Oregon Ducks) for the first time since the school fielded a football team in 1968.

Week 1 of the high school football season has arrived (with due respect to the handful of games played in the AISA last week.) In comes new regions, new classifications for some, and some interesting openers, particularly a few that feature teams playing for the first time.
The week ushers in new coaches at six different schools in the River Region.
Each week, River Region Sports will break down the top matchups of the week and pick a winner in all games involving teams from the area.

The message given to the Jeff Davis Volunteers by head coach Travis Pearson this week is simple.
“Let’s get a win!”
Undemanding to some but for a team coming off a 1-9 season and one that struggled to score points, it’s the right place to start.
