The Tallassee City School Board has approved the hiring of Mike Battles, Jr. as head football coach and athletic director at Tallassee High School.

AHSAA Class 6A 2011 cross country champion Carmen Carlos of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile shattered the AHSAA state indoor 3,200-meter record here Friday with the fastest recorded time nationally this season on the opening day the 2012 Indoor State Championships at the Metro CrossPlex.

National Signing Day is always a celebration.
In 2012, it may have been greater than normal in the River Region, if only due to the number of high school athletes that signed football scholarships.

Andy Pappanastos wanted a chance to kick in the Southeastern Conference.
Walker Van Hooser wanted a chance to play with his brother.
Both Trinity Presbyterian seniors will get their wish.
Pappanastos signed a letter of intent with Ole Miss while Van Hooser signed with Tulane during a special ceremony at Trinity on Tuesday.

Daphne running back T.J. Yeldon was named the 30th recipient of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Mr. Football Award Wednesday at the ASWA’s annual Player of the Year Awards luncheon hosted by Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association at the Alabama Activity Center.

Jimmy Perry likened his return to Montgomery as a pilgrimage.
Off fighting battles elsewhere, his heart never left home.
The former Robert E. Lee coach is back in Montgomery officially Friday accepting the head football coaching position at St. James. Players, parents and coaches were at the school gym to greet him.

Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game Part 1 is in the books.
It’s not too soon to start thinking about next year since the city of Montgomery has just a two-year deal with the Alabama High School Athletic Association as well as the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association to keep the game at Cramton Bowl.
