AISA TOURNEY RECAP: Macon East wins two to reach semis

Shelby Lowe was everything Macon East Academy expected, but once again the Knights had an answer for the Pickens Academy ace.

Macon East (55-11) scored the game’s first two runs with the help of errors, added two more in the fifth, then withstood a Pirate rally over the last three at-bats to win 4-3 and advance to the winner’s bracket finals in the AISA Class AA state softball tournament at Lagoon Park on Friday evening.

HOPE HULL – She may be one of the state’s best-kept softball secrets. 

Of course, word-of-mouth stories from opposing coaches have a way of getting around, so opposing pitchers have heard all about Hooper Academy junior Chloe Seithalil.

When Aubrey Blackwell was asked to consider adding head baseball coach to his duties at Catholic High, the offer intrigued him. 

Blackwell was named the 4A Coach of the Year by the Alabama Football Coaches Association, but one of his greatest passions – and his experience as a college player and coach – is baseball. The opportunity to rejuvenate the Knights’ baseball program, as well as the landscape of high school baseball in the city, was impossible to pass up.

Max Westjohn’s putback with 45.7 seconds left gave Tuscaloosa Academy the lead and Hadrian McNeil added a pair of free throws for insurance as the Knights edged Hooper Academy 52-49 in overtime in the Alabama Independent School Association Class AAA state tournament at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl on Thursday afternoon.
