Regional races are in full swing and it looks as though several teams from the River Region will be in the thick of those races all season long.
But Friday could be vital for some teams on whether they are about winning the region or just a playoff spot.

What do you take from the first week of the regular season?
It’s hard to pick where to start but with regional action beginning, most teams will know pretty quickly if they are contenders or pretenders in 2011. Last week may have given some indication but Week 2 will tell a lot more.

Most of the AHSAA teams in the River Region will open play on Friday with several games featuring old rivalries and a few new ones as well.

The best of AISA baseball will compete in the annual All-Star baseball games will be played Monday at Troy University. The Juniors game open the festivities at 4 p.m. followed by the Seniors game at 7:30 p.m.

B.J. Johnson picked up the win for Hooper with a complete game three hitter in a 3-1 victory over Fort Dale Academy as part of a sweep of a doubleheader. Johnson gave up one earned and had 12 strikeouts in seven innings… Hooper’s junior varsity swept Morgan Academy on 3-17-11 in a doubleheader earlier this week.

Hooper Academy’s JV team defeated South Montgomery County, 10-0 and 12-10, last Friday.
Drew Owen got the win in the first game and Robert Smith got the save. They combined to strikeout nine and give up only two hits in 5 innings.

Hooper Academy opened the season with wins in both varsity and junior varsity baseball on Monday… ALABASTER - The Hooper Academy softball team split four games during the Kingwood Christian tournament this past weekend.
