Sept. 21, 2017 was a red-letter day in LAMP athletics.

The Golden Tigers held their first-ever athletic event in their own facility as they played host to Montgomery Catholic in a volleyball game on Thursday night. And to cap off the event, LAMP’s players made it count by beating the Knights 25-23, 17-25, 21-25, 25-14 and 15-13, touching off a wild celebration among their students.

Hundreds of track stars compete at the high school level every year in anonymity.

Even the best ones, such as LAMP junior Won Heo, can help their athletic program to a state championship, but their own classmates know little about their accomplishments.

Their efforts received a little recognition recently when the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association added boys and girls cross country to the competition in the 21st Alabama All-Star Sports Week.

After overseeing what is arguably the most successful season in the history of LAMP athletics, principal Matthew Monson is aiming for higher goals in 2017-18.

The Class 4A program likely will never field a football program and doesn’t have a golf team, but qualified or made an impact in eight of the 15 sports that have championship play, reaching the semifinals in baseball and winning the school’s first-ever sports title in boys’ cross country in 2016-17.

LAMP’s magical run through the Class 4A playoff bracket came to a crashing halt at the hands of the defending state champions as the Golden Tigers ran out of gas and out of pitching on Friday afternoon at Paterson Field.

After battling UMS-Wright evenly through the first two games of the best-of-three semifinal series, the Tigers surrendered 11 unearned runs in an 18-0 loss to the Bulldogs that ended the season but did little to dampen their status as the region’s best team by reaching the semifinal round.

After watching their ace get rocked for 10 hits in the opener, LAMP fans wondered whether their team could bounce back in the second game of the best-of-three semifinal series against UMS-Wright at Paterson Field.

Philip Julian and his Golden Tigers teammates were up to the challenge, turning back the Bulldogs 4-1 in a showcase of pitching and defense that evened the series and forced a third and deciding game on Friday at 11 a.m. at Paterson Field.

It took LAMP three playoff rounds to find the right combination of hitting, defense and pitching, but it came together in the Class 4A quarterfinals as the Golden Tigers crushed Munford 16-2 and 8-2 to advance to the semifinals for the third time in school history.

Chris Goodman had already made hotel reservations for the Alabama High School Athletic Association South Regional softball tournament next week in Gulf Shores. The Alabama Christian Academy coach and his players make an annual pilgrimage to the softball postseason.

After making an incredible run through the 4A Area 4 tournament bracket to reach the finals, LAMP coach Anthony Norris needed some assistance from Goodman.

LAMP had led Holtville for the previous 10 innings of Friday’s doubleheader in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, but the Bulldogs’ improbable sixth-inning rally for a 6-4 victory to force a third game in the series was the type of gut-wrenching loss that could tear a team apart.

Pruett Singleton drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to force in fellow senior Sawyer Batson with the game-winning run and send LAMP into the quarterfinals for the first time since 2011. LAMP (18-13) will play host to Munford next Friday in a best-of-three series beginning on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
