Not to the halfway point, the Class 6A, Region 4 race is becoming wild and wacky… just like last year.

The high school football season reaches the fourth week (third week in region play) and already, upsets are making the race for the playoffs in the biggest classification hard to predict. With Jeff Davis winning on Thursday and G.W. Carver and Sidney Lanier both pulling upsets last week, the 2-4 seeds will probably come down to the final week.

Regional races are in full swing and it looks as though several teams from the River Region will be in the thick of those races all season long.

But Friday could be vital for some teams on whether they are about winning the region or just a playoff spot.

PRATTVILLE - It is hard to imagine how Morgan Academy lost its first game of the season. Whatever the reason the Senators came to PCA and quickly established the fact they would not lose two in a row.

A relentless, punishing ground game never let up as Morgan rolled to an easy 45-18 win over the Panthers.

What do you take from the first week of the regular season?

It’s hard to pick where to start but with regional action beginning, most teams will know pretty quickly if they are contenders or pretenders in 2011. Last week may have given some indication but Week 2 will tell a lot more.

PRATTVILLE - After suffering an upset loss in the first week of the season to Autauga Academy, Prattville Christian Academy (PCA) invited another possible disappointment while hosting Kingwood Academy Friday night.

The schedule is limited to a handful of games but the River Region high school football season officially begins this week with games in the AISA.

Prattville Christian Academy made its third-straight appearance in the Auburn tournament recently with hopes of continuing a trend.

The Panthers had shown improvement in each of the first two appearances. Despite being the smallest school in the field (enrollment) as well as the only AISA school in the 25-team field.

The best of AISA baseball will compete in the annual All-Star baseball games will be played Monday at Troy University. The Juniors game open the festivities at 4 p.m. followed by the Seniors game at 7:30 p.m.
