An Alabama High School Athletic Association task force charged with finding a competitive balance between public and private schools in the organization presented several options to the AHSAA Central Board of Control, which voted in a new system on Thursday morning that will move successful sports within schools to a higher classification based on their success.
The task force recommended keeping the 1.35 multiplier, a formula that originated in Alabama in 1999. Since then, other states have followed suit (which most abandoning the idea) but AHSAA officials gave the task force the option of making no additional changes, raising the multiplier, kicking private schools out of the organization, giving them their own classification or implementing what they call a “competitive balance factor.”

Jadarious Martin threw for a pair of first-half touchdowns and Kavosiey Smoke added another in the third quarter as the Indians defeated Carver 27-7 at Cramton Bowl in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs on Friday night… Alden Stroud rushed for a pair of touchdowns and Reece Solar passed for one and ran for another as Alabama Christian garnered its school-record 10th win with a 38-7 victory over W.S. Neal at Wade Black Norton Field… Trey Turner and Patrick McGhee combined to rush for 224 yards and held Autauga to just 54 yards on the ground as Escambia Academy stunned the Generals 30-20 in the AISA Class AA championship game at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday afternoon.

In all, nine teams advanced. While that is not a record, it was enough to give kudos for a job well done.

Quinton Jeter’s 25-yard field goal in overtime provided the game-winning points as Tallassee edged Thomasville in a Class 4A first-round game… In a matchup of two teams chasing historic seasons, Alabama Christian earned a 33-28 win over Northside in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs on Friday… G.W. Carver got a 70-yard touchdown run from Justin Lewis and a 25-yard touchdown run by Terrance Webster to pull off a stunning 13-7 win at McAdory on Friday night.

Better yet, it might have plenty of success, too.

BIRMINGHAM - St. James won its third state volleyball title on Thursday afternoon at the Crossplex, defeating Deshler 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 to win the Class 4A state title.
