Friday’s Jeff Davis-Stanhope Elmore battle was a tale of two halves.
Actually, make that a tripleheader.
Jeff Davis (3-3, 2-2) dominated the first half, building a 20-0 lead before the Mustangs stormed back to within six points, only to give up a big play in the fourth quarter in the Volunteers’ 26-14 win in Class 6A, Region 4 action at Cramton Bowl.

The River Region is still abuzz over the huge upset pulled by the Opelika Bulldogs last week at Prattville.
The Lions lost, 16-14, on a last-second field goal. Now, the move back into region play along with the rest of the teams in AHSAA as the second half of region play begins.

Teams in the River Region (AHSAA) take a break from region play this week but several games feature old rivalries, a few of which date back to the early 1900s.

WETUMPKA - The Prattville Lions gained revenge for two losses in 2010 to Wetumpka on Friday, easily winning, 71-12, before a overflow crowd at Hohenberg Stadium… Stanhope Elmore’s woes continue and the chance of a post-season appearance dwindled significantly with a 21-17 loss to Benjamin Russell on Friday… Montgomery Catholic (0-4, 0-3) fell to fifth-ranked Washington County, 42-13, in region play Friday night. Not to the halfway point, the Class 6A, Region 4 race is becoming wild and wacky… just like last year.
The high school football season reaches the fourth week (third week in region play) and already, upsets are making the race for the playoffs in the biggest classification hard to predict. With Jeff Davis winning on Thursday and G.W. Carver and Sidney Lanier both pulling upsets last week, the 2-4 seeds will probably come down to the final week.

MILLBROOK - Other than one minute and 12 seconds in the second quarter, the Friday night matchup between Carver and Stanhope Elmore was all Carver. A four play drive ending with a 13 yard run by Kenterrius Tyree was all the Mustangs fans could cheer about.
The Wolverine fans celebrated almost the entire game, and rightfully so with 38-7 victory.

Regional races are in full swing and it looks as though several teams from the River Region will be in the thick of those races all season long.
But Friday could be vital for some teams on whether they are about winning the region or just a playoff spot.

It didn’t take long for last year’s top three in the panel to move to the front of the class.
Michael Butler enjoyed a near-perfect week to vault to the top spot along with Stu McCann and last year’s champ Jim Tocco in this week’s standings.

What do you take from the first week of the regular season?
It’s hard to pick where to start but with regional action beginning, most teams will know pretty quickly if they are contenders or pretenders in 2011. Last week may have given some indication but Week 2 will tell a lot more.
